hurricane season is here

We've been to Disney the past 5 years either the last week of August or first few weeks of September. There was a hurricane in the making once but just meant for lighter crowds. I've heard Disney handles hurricanes (should they hit central FL) better than most places and it's one of the safest places to be. Works for me!

We're heading back in 2 1/2 weeks prepared with ponchos and extra shoes. Planning on rain every afternoon and will deal with more if it arrives.

Invest 99L is forecast, although with a lot of variability, potentially in some major models to cross Central Florida as a category 1 hurricane Sunday/Monday. Shoot me. We're supposed to arrive at CSR on Thursday.

Tropical Storm Gaston?!!!

You're kidding me right?

Makes me want to alphabetize all the disney villains for future storm names...

hasn't even formed yet. Until it actually shows up on the NOAA National Hurricane Center site and they are able to formulate a possible track, I'm not even going to think about this one.

They are tracking it, it's just not a tropical depression yet, so it's not named. All of the usual meteorological sites are plotting their projected paths, should it actually form. Of course it's still early days, but the next 48 hours should give a much clearer picture. Anyone flying into Disney in the next 5 - 7 days would be advisable to keep an eye on things. Personally, I'm hoping a centre never forms on it (NHC are giving it a 60% chance at this point), but with my flight planned for Saturday, I'll be keeping close tabs.

I like to think of storms/hurricanes as being "crowd-clearers" LOL!
Agree.....after we arrive at our resort and my daughters plane comes in safely. Don't want to drive in that. Don't want my 19 yo stranded in an airport.

Yes!!!!!!

You just made me so happy :worship:

Just saw on the weather channel should see rain due to this Saturday and Sunday in Orlando.

We arrived in Orlando around 1pm the same day Charley flew in...sbout 7 hrs later! It was crazy. But..now I realize that as long as I can get into MCO, it will be fine. WDW handles a hurricane better than anyone else. It was really incredible to see.
We arrive late Sept 3, leave on Sept 7. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. But, the thought of a hurricane doesn't horrify me anymore.

I'm just worried about anything coming to South Louisiana right now. We don't need it.

Me too! I know it's hurricane season, but we need a break!! We are supposed to leave for our trip next Thursday! We'll go if it's forecasted for FL. I'm not concerned about being in Orlando then. But, we actually might have to cancel or postpone if it's a threat to Louisiana.

Since your the storm chaser and know weather better than me :) how does my week look next week? I arrive early Mon Aug 29th and leave Thur. I use noaa too here in VA, but I'm not an expert on these tropical storms by any means.
We're flying in on the 29th, doing a park on the 30th, and driving to the beach on the 31st, flying home on the 6th. Hopefully this "blows" over for both of us!

I love going to Disney during hurricanes since it clears out all the crowds...although I won't be happy if I have to stand in the rain at the football game.

Let's say the storm hits and is bad enough that they close the parks. Would I get refunded for that day's park ticket? I ask because we are arriving late Saturday, have Sun/Mon park days, and leaving Tuesday. If the park closes say, a half day on Sun and all day Mon, it'd be a total waste of a trip, and not to mention a lot of money. I know Disney's hurricane policy is free cancellation if warning issued within 7 days prior to arrival, but I don't see anything about what happens if it occurs after you arrive.

I always peep the weather during hurricane season, we've been in WDW during one and the staff there are excellent and efficient during this time. It was amazing to see the people scrambling to leave, get rental cars and get out asap...we just kicked back and enjoyed the emptiness of everything!

Latest model I saw has it hitting the TX/LA border at cat 4. But things can change... I just moved down to southern LA at the end of last year and I've never had to really deal with a hurricane before. I was south of DC for Isabel, but that's completely different :/ I'm checking this multiple times a day

My only concern it's about the flight....I will fly there from Italy and I really don't want to risk not getting to the MCO :(

I worry about flights too, they can be messed up for days. I just saw a forecast where the computer models are taking it to southern FL end of this week. They did say things could change though. still to early to tell.
