Hurricane Pets in DVC Rooms

This subject was brought up over on the main Resorts hurricane thread. One person mentioned being told no pets at the front desk. Then the post below state they were told it’s ok in certain cases.

So, either it’s ok or it’s not. I did not believe the association allowed pets in DVC units under any circumstance. However, perhaps I’m wrong. Does the rule only apply to owners?

BLT
CM’s at front desk at BLT are telling evacuees that they cannot bring their dogs unless they are service dogs. I always thought it was a law that during a hurricane pets *are* allowed at hotels. Anyone have any other experience with this?

OKW
Ok-after some phone calls and them checking- old key west will accept pets in cases like this. Just in case everyone else has the same question!

The rule applies save in emergency situations. Hurricanes qualify.

What were they doing with the pets before IAN hit? Why weren't they not required to put the pets back where they were?

Bill, I'm not sure I understand your questions ... my brain kinda got stuck parsing the double negative in the 2nd question ... so please take the 'sample case' offered below with some grace:

Possible situation that would cause a member to bring pets during hurricane:
The member already had the reservation booked for OKW, or other DVC at WDW. These members live in SW FL (gulf-coast area) and were planning to drive to WDW. Their pets were originally intended to board near their home but the threat of inbound hurricane forces closure of the kennel. Seems evacuating the coastal regions to central FL with the pets is both a wise and comforting choice.
Of course, at this point, securing new kennel reservations in central FL might not be possible ... so again, they show up at WDW with the pets and their carriers, leashes, feed and beds.

Just an idea? One I've pondered a few times when prepping to evacuate fire threats. (Or once from fire from one direction and hurricane from another. Winds everywhere ... which might actually take out the house ... fire or flood?? Crazy thoughts.)

Agree with bwvbound.
Member had planned on keeping pet at:
Home with a pet sitter to check on them.
Boarding center in their home town.
Pet center at Disney.

None if those were options due to storm.

DVC resorts 'look the other way' due a nature emergency - fire, flood, hurricane.

My understanding of the situation being discussed in another thread: Someone who is not a DVC member had a reservation at Fort Wilderness. They were planning to take their dogs because dogs are allowed at Fort Wilderness. Fort Wilderness was closed due to the hurricane. Guest had not arrived yet (I think they are checking in on Oct 4 or 5). Guest got a call saying their reservation has been switched to OKW. Guest called to confirm that they could bring their dogs, and was told it would be okay to bring dogs to OKW. DVC members said to double and triple check that, because pets are not allowed in DVC units. Guest may have "called OKW" but normally calls to Disney resorts are answered by someone at an off-site call center who may or may not know anything about DVC rules.

The FW issue is real. When relocating campers Disney isn't making sure all the dogs go to "pet friendly" resorts. People get what they get, and the dog comes with.

Again, some of this is really about emergency situation. I am not sure you even have to have your dog on a FW booking so they cannot even see that one site needs to bring their dog, and they are working fast to get everyone into a building.

Then why in one post did BLT remain strict by following the terms of the association?

Also, where is the exception written? These things can’t just be pulled from thin air.

There is no law that requires timeshares to accept pets during emergency situations, so it appears (if true) OKW is taking it upon themselves to enact exceptions on behalf of the owners.

Now, for hotel rooms, Hurricane Irma is what started the pet fees at resorts. Will Ian be that for DVC?

I am not sure you even have to have your dog on a FW booking

You absolutely do. Every FW cabin and site requires a pet fee, except for camp/pop-up sites (no pets allowed).

However, many times the guests hide it by not disclosing it on the booking. Otherwise, the relocation CMs should have seen it. But I’m sure the fee will be waived for DVC.

I just have to say that I can’t rustle one speck of worry or outrage over this. There was a hurricane and it was an emergency. Whatever families needed to do to be safe and whatever Disney could do to assist-I’m a fan. Do those things. I am so fortunate to be on the West Coast and not face these and can’t imagine how terrifying it must be, so I’m definitely not going to judge what those in the middle of it did to get through.

We were onsite in the middle of Matthew and Ian, so have experience with the situation firsthand. We were evacuated from FW and moved into (2) DVC units at Poly. Our “pet” stayed in Best Friends Pet Care.

I also know how to separate my personal feelings and opinions from a contractual obligation, so don’t feel guilty for asking.

The contract allow the management company to allow pets as a representative of the board. So, I’d say they have the right to approve it in situations of an emergency. Here is the language.

This is what I was asking for. An exception written in a contract. Thank you. Although it seems not all contracts/policies are worded the same.
