What's with this hurricane that is down off the Yucatan? I looked at the models and some have it heading towards central and south Florida next week? I read the weather discussion and it sounds like some models say it will head to Florida and some say heavy rain in Florida. Terrific. Anyone else concerned? I have been looking forward to our trip next week for a long time. I sure hate the thought of bad weather while we're there.

We don't go until next Thursday (11/3) so I'm hoping it's resolved and gone by then, whatever it's going to do.

It's really hard to predict a hurricane path more than 48 hours away. But the projected path is showing on 10/30/11 (120 hours forecast) at 2:00 PM, Rina will be a Tropical Storm with 50 mph winds and be just north of Havana, Cuba
(Location 23.5 degrees N; 82.50 degrees W). The wind could affect southern Florida.

Very slow moving systems are very difficult to predict. OR, if you prefer, when the environment around the system is unpredictable, the systems tend to slow down and do some turns that would make a figure-skater blink.

At this point, I don't think this system is going to be an issue for the WDW-VB area. Depending on what happens with it, we could get a substantial amount of rain here is South Florids (which would be perfect since we're having a Halloween pool party on Saturday!)

I would keep an eye on this system for two reasons. One is that it's going to develop into a very strong storm over the next 24 hours (Category 3) The other reason is that the trend of the computer models over the last 2-3 days has been a gradual easing to the left,

Three days ago, they were saying the system wouldn't actually make landfall in Central America -- today the general drift is more northward and westward to the point that some of the models are actually bringing the system over part of the Florida Peninsula. But we're talking about the southern part, NOT Central Florida.

Systems that get strong tend to create a little bit of their own weather pattern, and considering the uncertainty of the models, it's possible the forecast track could change quite a lot over the next couple of days.

So I wouldn't worry about this system...but I would keep an eye on it.

Saw the 11:00 update from the Hurricane Center on the local news. As Jim posted, this one is unpredictable. They do predict it will reach 3 status and will come close if not hit Mexico. From there is turns east. Only one model has it making landfall in extreme SW Florida. Most have it just north of Cuba. They all predict it to be a Tropical Storm by then due to wind shear and dry air.

Right now, Orlando will not be affected by winds. It may bring rain to the area if it is big enough. This is one to watch because of the unpredictability. Doubtful it will enter the Gulf and have a severe impact on Central Florida however.

You may have to bring your ponchos but extremely doubtful you will have to hunker down.

and heading directly to where I am supposed to be in 2 1/2 weeks (Playa del Carmen)...DH already has been told if resort is damaged and the rest of the party goes to Dominican Republic (like they did the last time a hurricane hit the area) I will be staying home :)

We arrive next Thursday.....Hopefully it will just sputter out or go someplace else then Florida.

Watching the weather here now at OKW. They are saying it looks like a front is moving in from NW that will hold the storm at bay away from central FL area. That was the case last week as a storm approached that had tropical storm tendencies, they were calling for a washout day, 3-4" rain, so we based that whole day on forecast, only to find out a front held it further south and east of WDW. So the whole day we are waiting for the deluge, that never came. Good thing we went on to Epcot and had fun.
