Hurricane Matthew Closes WDW - Reopens Saturday, October 8th

I saw that post thanks! My question was whether anyone had any luck getting sea world tickets refunded. I know they are open on saturday but if I drive on saturday then I wouldn't be their till later in the afternoon and probably would only be able to do sea world for a couple hours which I'd rather not do. I actually finally got through to sea world and they are refunding me for the tickets. Thank you though
I love DW and everything, and all the magic in represents. I have two trips planned for next year, but a lot of what I'm hearing isn't that magical. First thing. I understand they need to make room for the Cruise people, but seems like they have already said they were going to give them a full refund, so why are they putting them in the rooms. If that isn't till the 7th why are they not giving the rooms to the people that are already there and giving them the cots? I'm not understanding the logic. My last trip to DW didn't start off good and the downpour at the NSSHSP kinda put a damper on things, but we made the best of it. I even ran into more surly cast memebers in those few days then I had ever. I'm really hoping my next trip to DW brings back a bit of that magic.

I don't know how people are getting through to even cancel....it just keeps telling me to call back later so I haven't even been able to cancel my first night at the Yacht Club.

Rumor has it parks will be closing at 2pm tomorrow. At 1pm today cast was told to check their schedules as MK will be opening an hour earlier. Party will obviously be cancelled. No word about Friday.

Mom just told me on speakerphone that the news said this is the worst hurricane Fl has ever seen....the size of Texas.

I'll keep an eye on CP and Alumni groups and see if I get anything on this.

CMs reported an hour ago that parks won't be opening early - changed back to 9:00a opening.

I haven't seen anything that says parks will close early on Thursday.

I heard a report that damage could be worse than hurricane Charley. When was that? I don't recall that storm

We are here now. Our friends extended their stay at Pop by 1 day (through Saturday night) with no problem at all.

It has been pouring for over an hour. We were hoping to go back to MK for EMH tonight to get in a few more park hours. This weather is frustrating.

DS received email from Disney that their event at Wide World of Sports on Saturday has been cancelled.

They already decided not to go, but it is a sign they are slowly cancelling some things.

- Disney Dream is stuck at sea. All those guests that would have gotten off and flown home will have missed their flights. Disney needs to put them up until they can get on the next flight. They are Disney's current guests and the change in the cruise plan has impacted them.

- The 7th cruise was cancelled, today. Am sure there were folks already there, in their hotels planning to take the Cruise bus. They are now having to arrange a way home. They are Disney guests and were to be their guests on the 7th.

- Disney has guests in a campground surrounded by water and full of trees. DANGEROUS. These folks must be moved to safety as well those in the water bungalows and in treehouses. I think it's safe to say all guests that are being moved have current reservations that Disney is honoring.

- INCOMING guests tomorrow that have reservations paid for absolutely should have their room held for them.

- From what it reads the poster who is upset was scheduled to check out tomorrow. They do not have a reservation. They asked to stay longer. Disney "had no rooms for them when they were asking" and they were upset. Now it may be they just couldn't stay in their room or their hotel or didn't want to stay somewhere offered or for a price of something else. I don't know, but I don't think Disney wouldn't have offered them a room somewhere if they had one .........

- If you were scheduled to check out tomorrow and made no adjustments to your reservation when they did have rooms, it would be logical that you would check out.

- We are responsible for taking care of ourselves on vacation. This storm didn't show up yesterday, we've known for days, ever since it turned north that it was potentially going to be a big impact. At that moment, I would have immediately booked a room for a couple nights. If you didn't book a room when they were available, then you need to book a room offsite which the poster did. I don't understand why someone who is not a guest on the books should get a room and a guest that is should sleep on a cot?

Stay safe, everyone.

Just a widely circulated rumor at MK today. Both parents heard it in different areas.

I'm sure all will be well for everyone in the Orlando area. I'm very nervous though. To all who are there, stay safe!

Some people's priorities really amaze me. I was born in/lived in hurricane country most of my life, and the safety of lives comes before anything else - including people's petty frustrations. :sad2:

Come on folks, please have a little empathy and look/see outside your own little box. This is a 'monster' storm and Disney or anyone cannot change a thing - just try to be safe.

Just got word from my uncle staying at the poly that he got an email that the night show they put on is cancelled for tomorrow night

I think it may be a good idea to either update the OP (With a mod's help) or sticky a post with all the delays/cancellations/etc related to Matthew.

This is a great thread, but it's a bit hectic to keep track of what is open/closed and whether refunds are available for things.

FWIW, Gaylord Palms still has availability (at least according to a friend), so you could always move there with minimal driving/cabfare tomorrow. Not to mention, it's a massive building with lots to do indoors.

We are here now. Just packing our bags since we check out tomorrow and getting ready to finish off magic kingdom tonight with EMH. We fly out at 3pm to Houston before our flight back to New Zealand so hoping we make that fine since we have an international connection to make. Cross your fingers we get out ok

Just to be clear about you assuming things when I have already said otherwise. Disney offered NO other alternative to US AT ALL. Even thought I specially said we will be ok if we needed to move. Which apparently they had since someone said that they were able to booked pop. I love how people always assume Disney is right. We went back to the lobby there was 5 people cancelling and leaving early (today and tomorrow early). And only one person trying to extend. There was multiple upset guest that were told the same thing we did earlier and they were livid as 5 people were canceling leaving tonight. In fact some really nice lady in line that change her flight to leave tonight said we could have her room for tomorrow night that they were refusing to cancel and refund her when she talked to Disney customer service. The manager did take care of her, but she said she will never be coming back after how she was treated.

Thankfully universal on the other hand has been fantastic and just in one call not only they find us a room but went the extra mile and made sure we were giving the rate and discount we have even though it is sold out and a 7 am check in. If we ever consider buying DVC before now for sure we will never will. We have never been in a hotel that has handle the situation so badly. And by the way we were willing to pay whatever rate they wanted as long as they will give us a room.

Just to add I am not saying that they should not move people from campsites they should but they should be able to accommodate all their guest.

Hurricane Matthew weakens slightly, will strengthen before hitting Florida
Orlando Sentinel
Hurricane Matthew is taking aim at Florida, leading to widespread evacuations, school and government closings, flight cancellations and the fear of widespread damage.

As of Wednesday night, forecasters predicted that it would scrape Florida's east coast late Thursday night, and could make landfall in northern Brevard County. If it doesn't make landfall, it will only be a few miles offshore, said Jerry Combs, a meteorologist withNational Weather Service in Melbourne.

At 8 p.m., the Category 3 storm had weakened slightly with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph and was heading northwest at 12 mph. It was expected to intensify overnight before it targets Florida's coast.

Most of Central Florida remained under a Hurricane Warning Wednesday, but Lake and Polk Counties were under a Tropical Storm warning.

"The fact that it's getting closer means we're going to be targeted by the strongest winds, which could be catastrophic," said WOFL-Fox 35 Meteorologist Brooks Tomlin.

Gov. Rick Scott said Hurricane Matthew could lead to the biggest evacuation in the state ever, "because it's unusual for [for a storm] to go along the coast and not know where or if direct impact might hit."

Tropical weather cone of uncertainty

Matthew has been on a path of destruction, bringing life-threatening rain and wind to impoverished Haiti and then Cuba. At least 16 deaths are blamed on the powerful storm in the Caribbean so far, five of them in Haiti.

The last Category 3 storm to hit Florida was Wilma in 2005; it caused $21 billion in damage and left people without power for a week.

All Central Florida public schools, universities and colleges will be closed Thursday and Friday. At the University of Central Florida, officials at the 63,000-student school urged students to leave campus if they could do so safely but offered shelter options as well.

Coastal communities were bracing for the worst.

Scott has been traveling the state and talking with officials from each county about potential impacts. He said it's important for people not to focus on the storm's path because it could change in an instant. Instead, he said residents should be preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best.

"If Matthew directly impacts Florida, there will be massive destruction we haven't seen in years," he said.

Shopping and gas

Shoppers in Central Florida were scrambling to get supplies and gas, but some hit roadblocks.

Lines to check out were backed up down the isles at the College Park Publix on Edgewater Drive in Orlando.

Jenna Pagnotti was at the Target on Colonial Drive at Maguire Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon looking for water and non-perishable food, but found the bread aisle nearly empty and the store completely out of bottled water.

She said being an Orlando native, she should've known to start shopping earlier before the hysteria started. She ended up buying hamburger buns for peanut butter and jelly, and Powerade.

"I wasn't freaking out, but now that it's a Category 4," she said, "I start preparing at a Category 3."

There were also empty shelves at the Publix on Colonial Drive near downtown Orlando. Shoppers were fighting for parking spots and store employees couldn't restock water fast enough.

Supermarkets and other retailers often run low on supplies before major storms in Florida, said Florida Retail Federation spokesman James Miller.

"It's good that people are prepared, but stores will be back up and running after whatever storm comes through," he said. "They should have plenty of supplies then."

Apopka's Danny Davenport went to Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market with hopes of restocking his cupboards before the storm.

What he found was aisles full of shoppers but short on the kinds of food he needs.

"They don't have anything for bread," said Davenport. "My wife is coming home from the hospital with our new baby today, so I wanted to get things taken care of. That didn't work very well."

Gas stations saw motorists filling tanks and gas cans, with some locations exhausting their supplies. Prices had remained flat to start the say, according to AAA's average price for Metro Orlando, but the travel association said earlier this week that a steep rise in demand could push prices higher.

The run on supplies also strained some gas stations.

"It looks like there have been shortages at a few stations, but it's not because of an overall supply problem. Some stations are just getting a lot of demand all at once," AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said.

A spokeswoman for Racetrac confirmed that.

"A few stations have run out of gas here and there, but it's not a widespread thing. We are getting stations refueled pretty quickly," said Karissa Bursch at Racetrac.

Transportation

State transportation and Central Florida Expressway Authority officials stopped all construction to keep roads clear, and tolls have been suspended in affected areas of the state.

Orlando International Airport said it was expecting airlines to begin canceling flights Thursday and into Friday. Orlando Sanford International Airport is shutting down at 10 a.m. Thursday.

SunRail's last train will operate at 2 p.m. Thursday, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said.

Public safety and services

Dyer also said the Orlando Police Department has put its officers at high alert and equipped them to respond during and after the storm.

"They have chainsaws, generators and bottled water so that OPD operations can continue seamlessly," Dyer said.

Roseann Harrington, Orlando Utilities Commission vice president, said utility crews will work as normal until wind speeds become hazardous, then will wait out the storm. It could be 48 hours before OUC is able to even estimate when power will be restored to all customers, she said.

"We ask for your patience," Harrington said. "This is going to be a slow-moving storm. It's going to be large and hover over us for a while."

Tourism and entertainment

SeaWorld announced it will close early Thursday and that it will be shut down all day Friday, while Legoland says it will close Friday. Other major theme parks had not announced plans as of Thursday evening, although Disney started moving visitors out of its campground and two small waterfront lodging areas.

Some hotels began offering discounted rates to evacuees seeking shelter from the storm. Visit Florida, which markets the state's tourism, added a sortable list of "emergency accommodations" to its website.

Laura Kimble drove to Orlando from New Jersey with her parents and her son. She visits Florida annually in October, she said, and this year, she's staying at a resort on Universal Orlando property, attending Halloween Horror Nights and Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, a special event at Magic Kingdom.

She and her family decided to stay in town.

"If we end up stuck in the room, we get stuck in the room," Kimble said.

Garth Brooks' Friday concert has been moved to 3 p.m. Saturday at Amway Center. The country music superstar also will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The 3 p.m. Sunday show was originally scheduled for Thursday.

A decision on Come Out With Pride Orlando's Saturday events will be made Thursday morning after discussions with local officials, organizers said. The parade, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, is expected to draw at least 150,000.

But other Come Out With Pride events will not happen. The official launch party at the Abbey is off Thursday night. Hamburger Mary's has canceled its Church Street Block Party on Friday. The performers can't get here from other cities, said Hamburger Mary's owner Mike Rogier, who added that he hopes to reschedule.

Spooky Empire says it will go on Friday through Sunday at the Orange County Convention Center.

The Winter Park Autumn Art Festival has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. The Winter Park Chamber of Commerce and City of Winter Park made the festival announcement Wednesday afternoon. They cited "the massive amount of planning and logistics" for not staging the event later. The festival had been set for Saturday and Sunday in Central Park.

Visitors in Cocoa Beach fled west for refuge, leaving the island city strangely quiet. Burger joints, nail shops, souvenir stores and hotels were closed, many clad in plywood or armored in metal shutters.

"The boss said he wants everybody out of here," said John Knox, manager of a 120-room Quality Inn.

There were plenty who refused to budge.

"I've lived here my whole life and never run from a storm yet," said Jimmy Michaels, 66. "The storm's going to fizzle out."

The White Rose shopping center where State Road 520 meets the ocean mirrored the rest of Cocoa Beach. Most of the dozens of shops and restaurants were closed, but not the Old Fish House Restaurant.

Owner Ralph Roderere said he decided not to shutter his storefront restaurant: "The two previous owners put up plywood twice and they said it was all for nothing."

Evacuations

More than 1.5 million Floridians were in an evacuation zone because of the hurricane.

Brevard County's barrier islands, including Merritt Island, are under a mandatory evacuation order that began at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Port Canaveral also issued an evacuation order for all cruise and cargo ships, fishing boats, and businesses and tenants at Jetty Park. The Disney Dream was rerouted to Fort Lauderdale and Carnival Cruise lines just dropped its last cruise passengers off and moved out fast to avoid the storms.

Those living in low-lying areas and on the barrier islands in Volusia County are also being told to evacuate. Bridges from the beach to the mainland will be shut down and guarded by deputies starting Thursday at sundown.

Bridges in Volusia will not be reopened until the Florida Department of Transportation inspects them to ensure they are structurally safe to be reopened, so no one, including emergency crews will be able to use them.

"Once the storm hits, we cannot put our first responders at risk to save your life," Scott said.

Scott said residents should not wait to prepare for the life-threatening storm. He also urged residents in evacuation zones to leave sooner rather than later.

Scott said there are about 100 shelters ready to open across the state.

"This is a dangerous storm and it is never too early to evacuate," Scott said during one of several news conferences Wednesday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

CM Staffing at Resorts:
UPDATE: Disney World Staffing “Ride It Out” Cast for Hurricane Matthew

Walt Disney World is currently inviting cast members to join the “Ride It Out” crew, a team that would be staffed through the storm to help accommodate guests with anything they might need. These cast members are staffed round-the-clock during storms of this nature.

This is the first time since the historic 2004 hurricane season that they have staffed this crew. These cast members will help guests stranded at the resort, offering food, drink, entertainment and more to guests.

MNSSHP Canceled:
Canceled:
MNSSHP has been canceled for tomorrow, Thursday, October 6th and Friday, October 7th.

Other Accommodations:
For anyone needing accommodations or knowing someone that needs rooms - there are at least a half-dozen Marriott properties within a $15 Uber range of Disney with availability tomorrow through the weekend.

Use MMF as a corporate code for a discount - most rates are incredibly reasonable. This includes the Gaylord, JW and Renaissance - most for under $150/night.

To do prior to being confined to your resort room:
For those who are staying in resorts that aren't contained to one building (Value and Moderates, Saratoga Springs, OKW, etc), I'd suggest going and getting some some basics in the morning - including food and some bottled beverages. Even if you can't make it off property, a trip to the quick service locations on property will at least give you some items to keep you indoors through the storm.

Also, anticipate for most hotel restaurants to fill up quickly over the next 48 hours. Be mindful and respectful of all your fellow guests, and especially the cast members in place.

Preparation tips:
good tips for those here now and staying here overnight
* try and keep your phone at full charge all day
* if you have them, charge ipads, laptops, any electronic. It will help if there's loss of power
* get portable chargers and charge those in case of loss of power
* for the kids. Get ear plugs. The noises from a storm can be quite scary especially if we lose power, that will help

Give me a break! I am perfectly within my rights to be dissapointed with a vacation that we have looked forward to for over a year and spent a lot of money on. It does not for one tiny second negate the fact that I know people are suffering. I should have known when I typed that I would get someone to pop off.

People are asking for "if you there are now please let us know what's happening," but when I do that's the crap I get. I was being perfectly honest. I am frustrated.
