Has anybody else been watching this storm? It's a catigory 5, and it looks like it's going to hit New Orleans.

Thoughts?

Ohhhh I have been watching it. They think it might be upgraded to a category 6(which is a typhoon). It looks really scary and I am glad that I don't live down there...

:paw:

I was just wondering. What exactly is funny about this? I've heard predictions of 20,000+ people dead because of this. Not exactly a laughing matter. :confused3

One of my best friends is in florida right now... she was in disney the past few days then was supposed to go on a cruise to key west/western carrib... but i'm not sure if she got caught in Katrina or not... i hope she didnt...

I thought a 5 was the max for a hurricane. Where is you hear this. The weather channel said it has a possiblity of becoming a 4 before hitting landfall.

I am watching FOX now and they are showing the people entering the Stadium. I would be terrified to be there.

 I thought only 9 ppl died.......

i heard it was a 5, and i dont know about the 6. i thought that it only went up to 5 as well. but i also heard that only like 3 category 5's have ever hit the United States. and there is a manditory evacuation so not too many people will get killed if any. and i heard there is like one person staying down there, and he is a radio DJ and he is staying in a Hilton or something.

yea people are crowding into the Superdome. and what i think is really scary, is that they said (National Weather Service) that most of the wooden strcutures will be totallled and destroyed and that the skyscrapers will be swinging in the wine dangerously and may even colllapse. Possibly, and most likely, the windows will be all blown out in them. plus, my aunt who lives around St James was evacuted today :(

That's just from Florida.

You see, New Orleans is below sea level. It does have a levy system to keep water out, but if this thing hits the right spots, the storm surge could go over the levys, thus flooding the city. People will die in the flood waters, plus you have the diseases that wreak havok after the storm passes. That's why the estimates for the New Orleans area are so high. That's also why everyone is freaking out and saying, "This is the one we've all feared".

Actually about 100,000 of the 500,000 people in the manditory evacuation area cannot leave. Many are in the Superdome. It is suppose to be strong enough for a hurricane, but has never been tested. Hope it stands. What about the water and toilets?

NO is 8-10 feet below sea level. The city has a system of levies and pumps to keep the water out and get rid of rain water. The storm surge will be 20-25 (maybe 30) feet, thus the city will have 28+ feet of water. The pumps cannot keep up and once power is lost, the backup pump generators can only last so long.

I live in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (which is where the hurricane was supposed to hit directly, before it turned,) but luckily my aunt and little cousin came over thursday morning and asked if I wanted to go to disney world! I agreed and stayed up there until today at All Star Movies. My mom is a nurse so she had to work at the hospital during the storm so she could not go with us, but on the night of the second day I went outside to call her and I looked to my left and down the hall my mom was standing there waving to me while she was talking to me on the phone, she had definitly suprised me! :) I fequently called home and some of my friends back down here as well to see if any damage had come of the storm. Our electric was out from thursday until late saturday evening. There were also a couple tree limbs down where I live and not to bad of damage! I just hope and wish that the people in New Orleans and even the rest of the area expected to be hit by this storm are kept safe and that the destruction is very limited. If anyone on the disboards is from this area I hope you and your family will be safe aswell!

I live in Northeast Louisiana, and we have tons of evacuies coming in. All of the hotels are full and people are taking them into their homes. They have evacuated much of the Southeast, but I'm not sure about the Southwest.

My brother and his wife live on the coast (literally, they are like, 5 blocks from the gulf) in Cameron Parish have not been evacuated. We have tried to get them to come home anyway, but, they're going to try and ride-it-out. They're only 4 feet above sea level!
Gosh, they're stubborn! ;) lol.

Alot of schools and churches are taking in evacuies, too. We are expected to get thunderstorms, wind, and lord knows what else. :confused3

That's all I know right now, but, I'll probably update. :wave2:

It is... I heard on the weather channel that there is a possibility that will become a cat. 6 meaning a typhoon since 5 is the highest for a hurricane..

there isnt a category 6...it only goes to category 5. But whatever category it is when it makes landfall, the damage is going to be huge and new orleans will be under water big time.

That's basically what I just said. :confused3

And to clear it up for everybody...storms are called Hurricanes when they are east of the International Date Line. Once they get to the west of it, they become Typhoons. There is no diffrence in strength between the two.
