Do NOT look at cable TV -- especially the Weather Channel -- they'll scare you to death in the hope of selling you Viagra. Selling stuff is really all they are about and a hurricane is a golden opportunity.

We are flying out or Newark early Friday...Do you think we will get lucky?? Should we try to resched for Thursday evening?? (Not even sure if we will get any seats!)

There are two problems in answering this, and the best answer is probably to call your airline and see what they advise.

The first problem is that hurricanes are notoriously difficult to predict. But from current forecast tracks, the storm is expected to be off NC Friday morning, then pick up speed and be in Nova Scotia by Saturday morning. Depending on exactly where the storm is, that could mean the weather in the Newark area will be pretty darn crummy all day Friday.

Compounding the problem, however, is that airlines can't just leave their aircraft on the ground in Newark and hope for the best. They will reposition their aircraft out of harm's way and then bring them back in as soon as they can to try to have an orderly re-start of operations. Some airlines will do that beautifully; others, not so much. There are so many factors (crew times, etc, etc.) that I think only your airline will have much of a handle on how they're going to be operating Friday morning.

Call them; you won't be alone!

we go on vacation in 3 weeks to emerald isle NC, and we are watching this to see if any stuff gets damaged. Right now it hopefully will stay east of the mainland, but even a burp to the west would smack EI square in the face.

I am glad I just rent on the outer banks, I have seen how those "castles" were built and if if joggs just a little west with 120+ mph winds and higher gusts, the damage will be historic. I know surge is usually the culprit but I am thinking that the wind may be as big an issue with how exposed the area is. At least they might be coverd by insurance that way.
