We wanted to take another Disney Cruise and our only real choice to go was middle to end of August. I know that they usually steer around the bad weather as much as they can but our main hope is that we don't have to miss our Castaway Cay day. If Castaway Cay is damaged or they can't dock for weather reasons do you usually spend the day at sea or do they usually try for an alternate port?

My experience on the Magic cruise that left Galveston on March 2 (don't recall what day we were supposed to be at CC), was that we had an at sea day. It was cold and windy and the currents and wind preventing them from docking. They tried several time that morning at scheduled time and again around lunch but were unsuccessful. Sure hope I make it on upcoming Sept. 28 cruise from Galveston again!

Just saw a report forecasting another ROBUST Atlantic storm / hurricane season. Rolling the dice with my Sept 8 Dream cruise ...

It really depends. If they think that they wont get to CC at the end of the trip, sometimes theyll go at the beginning. If CC takes a hit, it really depends on how bad they take the hit. It could mean stopping at the island to offload supplies and crew, and crusing around the island to not going anywhere near the island. They may even schedule a different stop. It all depends on what is happeneing just before that trip.

After last years August 25th 3 night Dream, that departed the day after Hurricane Irene rolled by.....and we missed CC and could not get off at Nassau the first day....they went back the next day instead of CC. I said never again.....

...but I could not resist the price in late August and we are going again next August.....I guess I am thinking could it really happened again.

We also were at WDW in mid August a few years back and had to deal with a tropical storm....kind of fun it cleared out the parks and we had Epcot to ourselves one day.

I figured the week before our cruise and the week after weather was fine.:cool1:

Good luckpixiedust:

I'm going to be cruising the first week of August...

As long as I cruise... I am happy ;)

We were on the 4-day Dream right after the 3-day that bbn1122 took after Hurricane Irene. We pretty much assumed that CC was out, but everybody was ectstatic when Captain Henry announced on Monday that we'd be going to CC on Tuesday, just 5 days after Irene pretty much scored a direct hit. It goes to show that they can get it up and running very quickly. It's just basically a roll of the dice whether any storms will change the trip, so you just have to be philosophical.

We were on that one too! They even recaptured the stingrays so that we could feed them. The worst part was dead vegetation because of the salt water. We saw lots of seashells, though.

I believe that the stingrays come back on their own after they are released for a storm. The CMs there explained to us that they are very well fed and they know they basically have it made at CC so most of them return every time.

At first our excursion was canceled because they escaped, but we were told they were able to recapture enough to have it. I'm sure knowing where their meal is coming from makes it easier to get them back:)

On our 7 night cruise in September 2005, our itinerary was changed from an eastern to a western because of two storms forming, Rita and Phillipe. We went to CC first rather then waiting till the end of the week. Other then the itinerary change we had bad weather from either storm.

We also dealt with Hurricane Isaac last year, but at WDW, not on a cruise. We spent a very enjoyable (but rainy) day at AK where the longest wait we saw all day was 5 min at EE (which is basically how long it takes to walk the queue!).

We're booked on a 4 night Bahamas cruise on the Dream in Aug 2014. I did purchase the insurance for that, though. I figure $150 on a $3000 trip is not too much to pay for the peace of mind that if there is a big hurricane, we won't be out any money.

In Oct 2005 we sailed during Hurricane Wilma. Monday was to be Nassau day, but the Hurricane was going to be in the area, so captain promised that he would just sail away from the storm and find us some sunny weather to float around in till the hurricane passed, then we'd go to Nassau on Tuesday.
Well, he couldn't get away from the storm, so we spend a VERY bumpy day at sea. Tuesday we went to Nassau and Wednesday on to Castaway Cay. Everyone who wanted to get into the water had to go to the adult beach - which they opened to everyone. The family beach was compromised as the netting that separated the enclosed cove from the open ocean had been damaged and they weren't sure if any unsavory sea life had entered the area.

That was our first cruise and was pretty interesting to sail in a hurricane, but it did not deter us for booking future cruises. We'll be going on #8 this September, so if there is a hurricane, "Been there, Done that, and no longer worried about it".

I would book a cruise during hurricane season in a heartbeat. All you gotta do is have insurance and trust that the DCL captains will keep you safe. You should always anticipate some bumpier seas, but you will be safe. pirate:

Hurricane forcast is now cya, It's part of the news. Form a person who starts with the 1947 storm, no names back then, to Katrina, and last year 7 hours of Issic seitting on top of us, make your plans and move forward, but buy insurance.

Have sat in back yard bbq and had tropic storm past 50 miles to west. Sunshine blue skys.

Most tropical storms are not the massive systems you see lately. I have no doubt that a Captain can typically avoid a wave or a depression type smaller system. But the evidence is there. You are floating in a very big very powerful ocean and I've seen them sheer the front off a condo like nothing.

I would go to WDW in a minute and have but I would not plan a cruise ahead of time. (Maybe grab a *GT two weeks ahead of something. You have a good idea of what's tracking in most cases, not all.)

In any case, with two cruises paid for this yr, we won't get to go until next yr and its not going to be fall for me because Nov is another election and I'll never be able to take off work from Sept-Nov (could go after and then the hurricanes would be slightly less...) So spring it is for me! We have cruised the last week of Feb in to Mar same week for 3 yrs and then the extra 3 day in April and that was perfect for me...

We thought last year with Irene coming through that the cruise would be cancelled but everything I read and anyone I spoke to at WDW before the cruise indicated that they almost never like 98% of time do not cancel. We were told they we reroute or switch ports to maybe Miami, but really never cancel.
I did not by insurance for the cruise with Hurricane Irene and I am wondering if I should do the same with next August.

Wishing all August cruisers this summer and next sunny sky's...and smooth sailing....pixiedust:pixiedust:
