I'm from Ft Lauderdale and as of this evening all non essential governmental employees were sent home and I am sure the port authority is also closing down the port. Our local sheriff has even convinced the school board to close down as of tonight. It is unprecedented! A few years ago we were on a "work day" when a cat 1 hurricane hit and the storm was on us before they let us go home! I have been teaching in this county for 26 years and we have NEVER closed down so early. So, I doubt very seriously that the port at Ft Lauderdale will be open on Sat. Perhaps Sunday, but not Sat. Max Mayfield the director of the national hurricane center said that they are about to put up a hurricane watch this evening. The port authority will make sure that all ships get out of port and close down, since they are not expecting it to hit until Friday/Saturday they may need to move to the west coast (Tampa)..however, the possible hurricane path cone goes right across the state so that may not be any good either. Perhaps they will send it out of New York (LOL). FEMA has asked that everyone prepare NOW because tomorrow may be too late. No evacuation orders yet, but it is coming if the storm stays on track. Charley has everyone running scared.
