What can you locals and experienced tourists tell me about Huntington beach? I've been to just about every beach in San Diego, and have visited Newport beach. This year, my wife and I want to check out surf city on one of the days during our Disneyland/Anaheim trip. We're both in our 20's if that makes any difference. Thanks for any input or advice you have! :beach:

I guess I could qualify as both "a local and an experienced tourist". I grew up there and now visit often to see family, go to DLR, etc.

The best thing about HB is that there are very few condos, buildings, etc. on the sand side of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), making IMO one of the best public and accessible beaches. PCH runs along the beach and is a great drive to appreciate the area. Breathe in that salt air!

State beach runs from the river at the Newport border to Beach Blvd., and city beach runs north from there. The city beach area around the pier is what most people think of when they think of Huntington Beach. The water is cold year-round; for example it's about 65 degrees right now. Parking is about $15 for the beachside lots.

The downtown area at the base of the pier has restaurants (cheap and upscale), shops, lots of locals and tourists, a surfing museum, etc. The pier has a Ruby's restaurant, surfers to watch, and some great views.

I don't need a hotel because I stay with family, but the Hilton and the Hyatt are both right across Pacific Coast Highway from the beach. The Hyatt is bigger, newer, and has a walkway over PCH to the beach. Predictably, more expensive too! The Hilton is next to it (a little closer to downtown) and also very nice. There are other smaller motels north of downtown or inland up Beach Blvd.

For a listing of local events, check this calendar. The vibe is casual and fun. There are usually people playing beach volleyball, surfing, a farmer's market on Fridays, etc.

How far is Huntington Beach from Anaheim? Easy to get there?

We have a rental for two days when we are in Disneyland and his looks very interesting to do for one day!!!

When I drive from Huntington Beach to Disneyland via city streets I usually allot 45 minutes. Of course if you do it during rush hour times it will add a little.

I live a bit on the west side of HB -- I always go north on either Edwards or Golden West (Beach would work too) to the 22 east and then decide based on traffic whether to continue to the 5 north and exit at Harbor/Ball (little or no traffic - like a Sunday morning ) or take the Harbor No exit from the 22 and turn left on Katella. Generally takes me 30 minutes or so - plus another 20 to park, get a tram, and get in the park! I miss the old parking lot....
Reverse for the trip home...exit 22 GoldenWest or Beach depending on where you're staying.

We do have a nice long, easily accesible beach. I live near Dog Beach ( end of Goldenwest st ) - it's fun to watch the dogs play there. Be careful of riptides near the pier. PHXscuba is pretty spot-on regarding the area.
