Hunkering down in TX...We don't like Ike!

Happy Hunkering everyone!! Stay safe and try not to stress too much. (Easier said than done.)

I hear chocolate and cheetos are good for stress eating - but I prefer cake for my hunker down snack of choice! :cake: (Pepperidge Farm Coconut Cake to be exact.) ;)

And check-in frequently through the night, as the electricity allows. :goodvibes

I truely wish there was something we could do here to assist all our fellow Texas Dis'rs but realistically all we can do is pray and then pray some more that you and your love ones remain safe and healthy and that you have minimal damage so I will be thinking and praying for all of you and wish you the best.

To all our TX friends please stay safe and check in when you can.

Biggest concern right now is storm surge it seems.

Hopefully, this thing will break apart and not effect as many was we fear.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers!

There is one other way y'all can help. If you could get the Podcast Crew to release a few hours of podcast audio for me to listen to during the storm that would be great. Just be sure to get them to hurry as my power should be out before daylight.;)

Seriously, though,
Thanks again!

The current "Hunkering Down" count on our CBS affiliate is 1,242 as of 8:25pm.

We are just waiting for it to hit here in the North Part of Houston, Spring.

I imagine the waiting is really stressful as the media has been building this up for a couple of weeks. What's the weather like right now? Any updates? Stay safe!

I am a little north of the coast right now. I am hearing it is not as bad as predicted but the worst has not made it so they say

Ike is taking his sweet time moving in... now expected about 1:00 am. However, strong winds are building and the storm surge is sending massive amounts of water into Galveston and surronding areas. As the storm heads in, the rain is starting and the strong, constant winds continue to blow.

Approximately 400,000 without power and will remain out until after the storm passes. My sister lives in Sugarland, and her power is flickering and she is expecting it to go soon. (Our power transformers are on the telephone poles, and as the high winds buffet the boxes around, they blow up and power is out until they are replaced.)

I am further north, so only seeing winds about 30 - 35 mph. I still have all utilities, but expect I may lose power this evening when the real storm kicks up. I am going to stay up until the worst is through, as our area is on the side of the storm that tends to have tornadoes. (My kid is going to sleep in an interior closet!).

I have to say our news stations have done a nice job - not too much hysteria, although it has been "all hurricane, all the time" on the local stations. We have had our fair share of weather people in hip boots getting slammed around by the wind. The Mayor of Galveston is a kick - an older lady who is no nonsense and tells it like it is. Unfortunately, about 40% of Galveston did not evacuate, despite mandatory orders, and several people are stranded but cannot be rescued. They have asked the news media to avoid filming dead bodies

And so we wait.......

I have been watching the fox news reports from Galveston all day. Looking pretty nasty right now. They did not say where the fire was, but apparently one is out of control?!

In addition to my friend in Crystal Beach, two former co workers recently moved to Galveston. ( One full time, one more part time. ) Hope they, and everyone, stays safe.

The eye is coming ashore and winds and strong winds are picking up.

The news is reporting that a popular restaurant downtown - Brennan's - has burned down this evening. Fire crews are unable to respond, but some rescues are taking place.

My power is going on and off, but so far so good.....

My sister left Clear Lake yesterday - she got stuck in the parkinglot of a freeway with Rita so she SWORE that if she ever had to evacuate again...she was driving straight to the airport and she was getting on the first flight out...she did... she's in Phoenix (partly because she was supposed to go there for a conference this week...) and she took my nephew with her...

Her husband is with the ride out team that is up in Baton Rouge for the the chemical plants along the coast... he's director and couldn't leave... they expect to go back as soon as they can...

They don't know if they will get flooded, but they are preparing to be away for a while if necessary...

Hi, im in sugar land right now working at an emergency center for local gov't.... we have lost power, but are on emergency power.... lots of transformers are blowing.... from the 2nd floor, able to see lots of blue flashes............my mom is in Lake Jackson, they lost power around 7:00, shes already lost 2 trees, atleast they didnt fall on the house.... hope everybody is doing good and hanging in there!

As an essential public works employee leaving is not really an option for me..........

Hi!!! Thats me too... i work for the PW and Utilities Dept.... mainly the calls i'm getting is for lots of down trees... havent had any calls for the last couple hours due to the wind/rain....but afterwards, i'm worried about how bad it is... this is going to be a huge cleanup here in Sugar Land, and i cant imagine how long we are going to be without power.... pretty scary actually... If i remember right, after Alicia went through, i was living in Lake Jaskson, we were out for a couple weeks, and also i think the folks from Gustav, still dont have power.... hey why cant these storms hit in the cooler months!! hehe (k, just had to throw some humor)

CNN is reporting 83 mile winds in Beaumont now, I'm thinking of drakthib and hoping they are well hunkered and okay there in Beaumont. Hoping all our friends in Texas are somewhere safe. :guilty:

constant coverage on the local news here in Dallas and the convention ctr is filled and closed now as a shelter. My uncle and aunt who live in TX City decided to stay. My cousins in Houston stayed too. hope all are okay. My aunt and uncle both work at the hospital in Galveston. I figure i will call my mom around 9 and see if she has heard from my uncle or not. He isn't in good health either (cancer and doing chemo), so hope they are okay. They have a lot of animals too, so not sure where they could hunker the donkey down at?

i know one man was already killed in corpus when he went out on the jetty to see the big waves. Wave swept him away. Two others were injured trying to save him.

We grew up going to my grandpa's beach houses in Surfside beach (near freeport), i am guessing those will be gone or completely destroyed since they were one block/house from the beach.

we are expecting a lot of heavy rain around noon here and 30-40mph winds with gusts in the 50s they say. I think my sister's bridal portraits (outside) will have to be postponed today!

Ike is definately here! We are in Spring, just north of Houston, and lost power at 4:00 this morning. Thank goodness for laptops, wireless internet, and generators! All is well, still getting a lot of rain and wind.
