I’d like to first THANK everyone for all the informative information concerning ECV rentals.

I usually only post on the DCL forums, however, with the cruises being postponed ( I’ve already pushed my cruise back three times), we’ve decided to visit Disney instead this year.

We’ve invited my Mother In Law to visit with us. She absolutely loves Disney. She’s a VERY independent person. Suffered a stroke about three years ago. They had to remove a small part of her brain that controls her equilibrium on her left side. She uses a cane, for balance purposes, when I can get her to go out. When shopping/trips to the zoo, etc she always pushes a shopping cart or stroller to assist in her walking.

Due to the amount of walking involved at Disney, we’ve convinced her to rent a ECV scooter. We are renting from Gold Mobility and they will deliver to our rental house in Kissimmee. We are planning on visiting Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. In addition, a trip to Downtown Disney and a few other places.

Now, here’s a question, which I couldn’t really find an answer to. Parking at Magic Kingdom....how far is the entrance??? Will we have to use any additional transportation to access this entrance? I know she’s not really keen on the idea and absolutely hates it if she is holding others up. Heck, even walking with a cane, she’ll still hold the door open for others. (She does have a Handicap parking permit)

I just know with her balance problems and knee replacement she’s unable to stand/walk long distances. On the cruises, we always get a regular room, and she’ll walk to dinner or places on the ship.

I apologize for the length of this post, but want to thank everyone for the information.

Magic kingdom you had to take the ferry boat or the monorail to the park from the parking lot both are ECV assessable

With a handicapped parking permit, she will be the shortest distance from the Ticket and Transportation Center where guests use either the monorail or ferryboat to get to the MK park entrance.

As was mentioned, both the monorail and ferryboat between MK and the Ticket and Transportation Center are accessible. I’d suggest using the ferryboats for 2 reasons:

1) the monorail stations are elevated one large story above the ground. Getting up and down from the station requires going on a very steep ramp. Some ECVs have difficulty getting up them.

2) getting onto and off of the monorail train requires having a CM set up a ramp for you. They are pretty good at it, but if she doesn’t like fuss, she might not like the attention. The ferryboat is a straight drive on.

If she’s never driven an ECV before, have her practice at your resort before venturing out to the parks. She should get comfortable turning both directions while going forward and backing up. Also, even though she may not get as physically tired, it is tiring to use an ECV - the driver needs to be watching for other guests who tend to dart in front of wheelchairs and ECVs without warning.

if you use the ferry to MK she will not be holding anyone up as everyone uses the same line and you roll on as others are walking on as you have to use additional transportation to get to the MK gate. Ps it can be a long ways from car to the gate at any of the parks and there no parking lot trams at this point
