Well they are doing it to us again. Who are they you ask. Why the oil companies, and OPEC in general. Everytime things seem like they are leveling off up go the prices. This has a huge effect on travel in our country. I was just checking SWA fares for the upcoming summer, and they are listing one way fares at $174 each way from Providence. this is exactly $125 more than I paid last August. Are they nuts? No! But I am sure it's tied to the future fuel prices. Well at $348 RT PP, that pretty much puts this family vaca in jepardy. That will put us at $1843 :earseek: including taxes for the 5 of us. Last August was $550. When will this crap stop? :sad2: Sorry just venting.

Southwest only has prices posted until August 3rd so keep checking back every day to 'catch" when the schedule changes.

Sign up for thier email alerts and for the DING program. The email alerts usually are sent on Wednesday's and I always check the site for deals first thing Wednesday morning or if I am up late.......after midnight on Tuesday.

If you do decide to book at the higher rate and a deal comes along, you can call Southwest to adjust your rate and get a credit (a Southwest credit not a CC credit) for the difference. The credit must be used within a year.

Good luck. We are also from RI and we have never paid more than $200 RT to Orlando using Southwest. Of course my time is a little flexible since my kids are grown and I no longer have to plan trips around school vacations.

I still see promotional fares for $79.00 and fun fares starting at $119.00 for that time. What were the dates you were checking?

delta is $196 round trip from providence changing in atlanta for mid/late aug

Yup, your right. I see that now. I guess I must have checked some other dates closer to now. I am usually on their site daily ckecking things. I still see an upward trend. I know they are talking gas going up a quarter within days. Aviation fuel has to follow soon. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. Of course there is always Amtrak, which I would love to do. It would mean an extra day down and back, but who cares. ;)

I hear you, Coach Rick! I am trying to find airfare from DTW to PVD on the cheap side for DCI finals in August. SWA is a possibility, but they usually mirror what NWA charges. Is there another airport I could fly into that is near to Foxboro? We'llb e renting a car.

Unfortunately no! Boston is more by about $40-$50. So Providence is the go to in the area. Where are you staying? Funny I am situated right between both venue's. Foxboro is 8 miles NE of me, and Bryant College is 8 miles SE of me. Looks like NW is cheaper than SW. I am showing $248 on NW to PVD, vs. $266 on SW.

You got airfare for $49 each way. The truth is that even SW can't make money on those fares. Now you might get lucky and get something like that again, but I would think something closer to $ $150 to $ 200 round trip is more resonable and I would bet you will see a sale in that range.

I empathize with your frustration. I am trying to book a flight to St. Louis in May and last week SW was $239 total, today they are up to $294. Booking flights is like playing the stock market. I don't know if I should just book now or if maybe prices will drop. *sigh*

Yup I sure did. Of course when I first booked it was $79. They promptly gave me a SW credit which I am using this week. :cool1:

Don't get me wrong, I am not blaming SW. That is by far my absolute favorite airline, and it would take some to get me to change airlines.

I just checked Amtrak, and they would be cheaper with a couple of bedrooms for the night portion of the trip. That would be an adventure! ;)

Coach Rick (what do you coach)?

I Came home with our oldest son on the Autotrain last Dec. I loved it and would do it again in a minute (round trip airline tickets were actually cheaper
$130.00 rt) Good food for those in sleeper car.

Our son (19) not so thrilled, he's still whinning that he could have driven home quicker.

Gotta love sw's rapid rewards 3 bonus points in Feb (go Patriots) and then 2 more for downloading "DINK" on desktop.

Hey We'll be down there in August too

I am not looking forward to the rise in airfare. We need to fly out to CA to see DH's grandparents so they can meet our youngest son. Grandpa isn't going to be around much longer.

Not sure if this is even an option for you or what your dates are, but have you tried Song or Jet Blue out of Boston? We were able to get RT on Song for $155 pp total (last week in August 2005). Just thought I'd throw that out there to see if it helps you out at all.

Just as cepmom said..do you guys have a jetblue or delta song terminal at the airport near u?
We found 2 -yes 2 roundtrip to orlando from nyc in august for $300!!! jetblue was only a little more! good luck :wave2:
