Hubby says I don't need to plan!!!

This thread is the perfect opportunity to post a hilarious comment I received when I was obsessively planning my last trip. It was an extended family trip and some (including my hubby) wanted NO part of any planning - especially the level of ADRs and FP+ ride selections. I posted a thread here about family who didn't appreciate my planning and how to get them on board. I wish I could find the original thread or credit the wonderful poster who said this, but I can only find the text that I cut and pasted into an email. It is a spoof on Jack Nicholson's monologue from the movie A Few Good Men

"You can't handle the truth! Son, we vacation in a world that has FP+ and ADR's and those things have to be planned by people with type-A personality. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Aunt Sylvia? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for "going with the flow" and you curse the 17-page spreadsheet. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know, that Being up at 6am on 180+ 10, while tragic, probably saved a reservation. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves time! You don't want the truth, because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that computer. You need me on MDE! We use words like "pin code", "FP+", "touring plans". We use these words as the backbone of a life spent making something magical. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a person who rides, and eats TS, and sleeps on property under the blanket of the very plan that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you", and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a laptop and log on to Dis. Either way, I don't give a magical disney day what you think you are entitled to!"
I love this! I was laughing so hard! Best post ever!

Well . . . If you're going for 14 days (that to me sounds truly awesome because I've never been more than a week), I would tell DH "OK, I plan every other day, and every other day we'll go spontaneous, on your whims and plan-as-you-go day. Agree to go along with good attitudes on each other's days. See how it goes. As a type A planner, I'd take it as a challenge to secretly make my days the most magical. And I'd also enjoy the heck out of the days I could just go with someone else's flow.

I planned like a fiend last time we went and everyone was miserable. It fell apart about mid week when mutiny was imminent. I will not plan next time except maybe 7DMT (if that).

To be honest i'm our trip planner and I have largely stopped planning so I'm with your hubby. i've been watching ADRs all year and you can get almost all the places we would eat in at 24 hours notice easily exception being chef Mickeys so we will probably only have 1 ADR. We are rope drop tourers so we tend to go real early ride what we want to by noon then leave and go do other things so FP+ isn't a massive deal with us.

for me going with the flow is now more important than go go go
Yes, this will be our plan next time. My family has also begged not to do TS next time, either, except Liberty Tree and Coral Reef. Coral Reef because it's a tradition.

I LOVE that. Cracked me up. Cracked up DH when I read it to him! I didn't tell him what it was from but he immediately got it. :)

4) Keep Calm and Book your Ressies

Love!

As I was reading this I pictured your reaction being like your avatar...lol

You quite literally made me laugh out loud AND snort.

I have largely stopped planning

OK

i've been watching ADRs all year

Um. that's not not planning. :) You've planned for a year to do minimal planning. ;)

There IS a middle ground!

There is planning for a commando trip.

There is planning for a more laid back trip.

There is not planning at all and hoping for a laid back trip.

Planning for the commando trip didn't work for your family. Skipping the middle step and going straight for hoping for a non-commando trip would be, for me, really foolish. And awful. And not fun.

Go for the middle one. :)

I threw some of that into google and found another post you made with it, and at that time you wrote "I got the most hilarious reply in that thread from EvilqueenMindy". So that's who you said said it. :)

You have to keep in mind the people that are traveling with you. My wife and boys HATE pre-planned days. They hate them wherever we travel. We don't do organized tours lasting longer than a few hours anywhere in the world for this reason.

I love to plan, but love them more. I have learned to relax and go with the flow. Our vacations are no less magical for it, even at WDW in the ADR and FP+ era.

That's when we stop going, when it's not fun any more; it's halfway there now. If we can't do it in our preferred style, sadly, we won't do it at all.

It was my jam from a year or two ago. Glad it is still around.

I hate to plan too much myself and we never have done anything but select which park which day.... not checking for crowd levels or using web assistance. FP+ now means those days are gone. My DD and DSIL bought a house in California a couple years ago so next trip in 2016 could be my last to WDW (hope not though). DL will be better after that since I can visit them and get my Disney fix on the same trip!

I have selected my resort and the days I will be at WDW in 2016. I have my calendar marked for day 499 out so I can make resort reservations. Then I will mark calendar for Fast Pass and ADR dates. We will probably only plan one or two ADRs since we hate to overspend on food. But plan those we must!!

Will still not go nuts with any other planning. I refuse!!

Thanks for tracing it back, Bumbershoot! So glad to give credit where it is due.
Evilqueenmindy - thanks for sharing your humorous talent! :worship:

I didn't realize this. . . I thought when I was planning, I picked one park for a certain day and later made adjustments where I wanted to switch days and therefore switched all 3 pre-selected FPs to a different park. I did this at least 45 days out, so maybe you're just saying it's not longer available as a choice on the day of your visit?:confused3

You can change them up to and on that day.

But there is no guarantee any FP availability for the rides you want to switch to. You will be cancelling your existing FP+'s (which may be scooped up) and have to book the new ones from scratch.

I like to plan. A lot. I advocate it.

Devil's advocate: I'm wondering if hubby is trying to indicate he doesn't want things to be too regimented. In which case, no problem; there are degrees of planning. But I'd want to get ADRs and FP+ booked (and therefore which days at which park(s)) at a minimum.

I planned vigorously last time and hubby says I don't need to plan this time - it can be more relaxed

What was your last trip like? Was it Jam packed with bookings? (I know ours are)
Maybe what your husband needs is some more down time planned in?
So yes you need some planning like any ADRs or FP+ but possibly you need to look at it as he we have a FP for x coming up if we want to use it shortly rather than quick guys we must be at x in 10 minutes go, go, go if you know what I mean?
For example I have booked all ADRs I wish to have knowing DH will possibly not want to do some, he isnt interested in discussing a trip so far away. A week or two before we go I will lay it out and cancel whatever he isnt keen on, I may be a little disappointed to "miss out:" something but if I push to much I will have a grumpy DH which wont be enjoyable and he wont want to come back.

Your husband will thank you for planning it!

One year we went without alot of ADRs because in the past with priority seating we never had a trouble eating where we wanted to. (We are a food family) Big mistake! We were always planners but after that we were even more detailed. When spending that kind of money to go to WDW, we want to make sure we get our money's worth out of the entire experience. Thus we plan everything. Yes, we are willing to change mid-day only if we all agree.

Good luck!

You should do Day 1 with no plan and when he realizes how futile that was, he'll be happy when he finds out the rest of the trip is planned. ;)

My husband thought I was crazy for doing a little planning for our Disneymoon - but he understood once we got there.

We don't plan a ton - which park what day, do ADR's and FP+. That works for us :D

Previously we visited Florida in 2011 for 21 days (very lucky) we had 14 day Disney ticket and ultimate tickets (universal, sea world, aquatica, Busch grds) I had planned everyday. I booked 3 Adrs. Used fastpasses (paper) in the parks. Most of the time things went to plan, but on occasion didn't. He says I don't have to plan as much this time but with fastpasse plus I think more planning is needed!

+1

We are soooo much happier without the Epcot death march, the magic kingdom bump and grind, without getting up at the crack of midnight to get a fp+. lol. I'm going in 30 days and guess what there are still plenty of ADR's open.

I'm with your husband, I gave up spreadsheets and "best park" days years ago
