Hubby lost his job

Kay1 -- Many of my DH's co-workers in the newspaper business have been laid off or cut to part-time.

My oldest DS graduated with a BS in computer science from a good school over a year ago and has not found a professional job. There are so many IT people with years of experience being cut here that there's no reason to hire entry level kids.

Recent Bachelors degree graduates really should seriously consider continuing with grad school to wait out the current situation while increasing their qualifications. A lot of effort should also be spent in school doing internships, because these will get some experience on the resume and get connections for positions after finishing school.

i'm so sorry, OP  my DH will most likely lose his job at the end of this month-they call it a 2 month shutdown, but i'm pretty sure if the place closes, it won't reopen. i'm praying it doesn't happen, but if it does, i'll cancel our wdw trip and pray he finds something soon. jobs are almost non-existent around here (ne alabama). keep your chins up, everyone, we'll all get through this.

My son graduated from college last Saturday with a BS in Biology. He wants to go to graduate school to become a physician assistant. The hardest part is getting the practical experience he needs to get into PA school. He needs hands on patient care experience. Since he's not trained or certified, it's challenging to get hired. He's starting EMT school in early June for two months. Hopefully, he will be able to get a job and get the experience he needs.

These are very challenging times. I'm so sorry for all of you who have lost your jobs. I am a salaried retiree from one of the automakers and I'm worried every day. I worked 36 years for the same company and now it could all just disappear. Very worried about my pension and healthcare.

Good luck everyone. We are all going to need it!

My DH's job was eliminated 2 years ago after 21 years with the same company, at the start of this economic downturn. He was a computer operator. Last month he finally found a full time position. For the year prior he worked part time nights at a grocery store so that he could still apply and interview during the day for other jobs. For the second half of 2008 and the first 3 months of 2009 he had a hard time even finding anyone who was hiring. The last 2 months it seems to have picked up and he has even interviewed for another position.

Hopefully, this is a sign of good things to come!

Mine too! DH was let go after 24 years 3 weeks ago! OP, and everyone else who is going through this - I am so sorry -All we can do is pray that this recession ends soon! I keep sending my DH resume to everyone and he keeps going out and filling out applications. He was a field tech for an auditing firm. A larger company offered higher technology and the company he worked for couldn't keep up so they lost their big contracts and closed shop. So Sad! Never saw it coming.

Think positive, We will get through this! :grouphug:

I am so sorry!! I hope he and all of the other laid off people here find something else soon!

Dh and I along with way too many family and friends have been in that boat over the past few years, but we live in Michigan, so that's kind of a given. I hope things turn around very quickly! My job is pretty "safe" but dh works on a Chrysler acct, so that is pretty scary!

I am so sorry. It was bad back in 2001 ( hubby was off work for almost a year) and now it is just terrible!

I lost my job a year ago after 23 years. Hubby has not had a raise in 6 years and his company is not doing well... so he could be right behind me. We are both at an age that new jobs are hard to come by...and oh yea, we are getting .02% interest on our IRA cd. :grouphug:

I am so sorry to hear about those of you who have lost your jobs or have family members that have. I pray you find good stable jobs soon.

For the person who asked about industries that are hiring, I know there are many, but I will tell you right off the bat that the one industry I know of that is constantly hiring and is actually in serious need of help is the medical field, especially doctors. For the one asking for her son, try to talk him into becoming a Dr if he has any interest at all! I read this article the other day that the US will be losing bout 30% of their Drs within the next 10-15 years due to the fact that the many Drs are baby boomers who are nearing retirement age. Aside from that, the medical industry is a timeless one. It will always be needed. That article was mentioning that medical schools are being pressured to raise enrollment and accepting students much easier than before. Not just Drs are needed though, people are needed across the board. Perhaps he'd be interested in being a pharmacist or an x-ray technician, or another sort of medical technician, if being a Dr isn't for him. I am actually considering looking into the medical industry myself.

I am hesitant to post personal info in the internet, but one thing that hasn't been mentioned is all of these people laid off (and, yes, it has affected my family) who are now without health insurance.
in many instances, the person laid off has a spouse who has health insurance. but often, the spouse is a homemaker. or a waitress. etc. etc.
there was a thread about 8 months ago: "is health insurance a right or a responsibility?"
8 months later.. how many people have changed their tune, now that it affects them? how many people, who had the same job for 27 years, with benefits, find themselves without benefits? and have pre-exisitng conditions, and need , say bloodpressure meds.? and are without a major income, yet cannot afford health insurance, or would not be accepted, even if they COULD afford it?
people in this great country, who worked all their lives, shouldn't have to be afraid to get needed yearly mammograms (esp. if breast cancer runs in their family), or a doctor ordered colonoscopy(when colon cancer runs in their family) because they can't afford it. and, even if you can pay for the tests... who will pay for the treatment? if anything, hopefully not, is found?
those of us who "did things right" should not have to do without basic health care. feel a chest pain? ignore it. it'll hopefully go away. big blind spot? history of bad eyes? maybe it'll go away.

ok, off my soap box....:confused3

My hubby lost his job on Friday. Position eliminated. They had him pull an all nighter Thursday to Friday (networking/IS) before they told him Friday morning. :sad2:  :sad2:. Very sad that companies don't have any honor anymore. I can understand if you need to let someone go but this is the second company that did something like this. My last company would have salaried people (normal hours mon - Fri) work the weekend and them call them to the main office Sunday afternoon to let them go...

DS in college and DD will be a senior in high school. I am hopeful he finds something soon but it is definitely scary times.

Okay - no more whining. Just needed to vent.

I love the budget board but think it will be more important in the weeks to come.

It is very sad. My company told us last week that they were eliminating 30% of our departments workforce by June 1st. I'm in medical research. Now every one here is walking around on pins and needles wondering who will get laid off. They still haven't told us any thing. Every one thinks they are going to wait until this Friday, right before the long weekend.
I will say they have been very generous with the severence package. $5000 education check and 2 weeks pay for every year of employment up til 1 year total salary.

I'm in the same boat as you. I just sent a big fat check to Marshall University in WVa for my son's tuititon. He'll be a freshman in September. Now I'm wishing I had encourage him to go to a state school (we're in NJ) but I wanted him to have the experience of going away. :guilty:

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with you but my b-i-l is an ER doc and he's not doing very well right now. A lot of people are using the clinics in Publix, etc. for small emergencies. His emergency room can't turn anyone away and a lot of his patients have no insurance, jobs or assets. So now is probably not the time to become an Emergency Room physician.

For the poster who is trying to figure out what careers will be hiring in the future, you might want to check out the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which gives educational requirements and salary information for most categories of jobs. http://www.bls.gov/OCO/
