My hubby lost his job on Friday. Position eliminated. They had him pull an all nighter Thursday to Friday (networking/IS) before they told him Friday morning. :sad2:  :sad2:. Very sad that companies don't have any honor anymore. I can understand if you need to let someone go but this is the second company that did something like this. My last company would have salaried people (normal hours mon - Fri) work the weekend and them call them to the main office Sunday afternoon to let them go...

DS in college and DD will be a senior in high school. I am hopeful he finds something soon but it is definitely scary times.

Okay - no more whining. Just needed to vent.

I love the budget board but think it will be more important in the weeks to come.

Jewel,

I am so sorry for your DH and pray he will find something else soon. Looking for a job is a full time job. I will pray for your family.

My DH lost his job on Friday too. He's been there 16 years. It's been getting bad the last few years though. No raises for 2 years, hours cut to 36, no 401k match and they recently dropped health insurance. He also was laid off almost 1 week every month last year (got untemployment then). So we kind of knew it was coming. There's no set return date, so it's probably permanent.

Even though we knew it was coming, it's still scary! Especially since my job is shaky also. They've cut our hours to 37, no raises this year, no 401k match and I think there is still more to come.

Luckily we only have our mortgage, no car payments (but we have old cars), or credit card payments. It's still scary! Not sure where DH will find a job. I told him maybe now would be the time to get some education. I thought I heard the government would help with that.

Anybody have any kind of advice for us? I was laid off for 6 months 7 years ago, but things are so much different now.

Sorry for everyone in this situation. Hope it gets better for all of us soon!

Hang in there. Sorry to hear about your husband's job loss.

I too had my "position eliminated" after 15 years at my company this past December. So much for loyalty and all that hard work! I too felt like the last week of my employment I was taken advantage of as I was assigned several large scale projects that needed to be completed and involved me to do quite a bit of work from home in the evenings just to complete, only for them to let me go at the end of the week.

That's corporate America for you!

I am trying to view this as a blessing as I am going to use this opportunity to change careers. Money will be very tight for a while, but it will be worth it if I can find myself in a career that is more fulfilling.

May I ask what industries are laying off? I know car manufacturers because that's covered in the news, but my son is entering his second year in college and has yet to settle on a major. It would help him, and so many others, if Disers who are experiencing layoffs would mention what sort of jobs are vanishing.

I have heard that the government is offering training in the alternative energy field.

My DH worked for a company that builds semi-trailers, so it's similar to the car industry, people are just not buying them. They used to employ 1,100 in 2007, they're now down to less than 300 employees.:scared1:

I work for a newspaper publisher, we publish several area newspapers. I work in graphic design. The advertising is way down, making for smaller newspapers. And the newspaper industry may be a thing of the past so they say, so many newspapers are folding.

I think there are a lot of jobs everywhere being affected, not just the auto industry. They always say healthcare is the field to get into. I don't think I could handle that though.

:hug:OP and others on here, I'm sorry for your family's job loss. I hope things start looking up soon

I'm in the same boat. DH lost his job a week ago Monday. I'm not really sure what we are going to do. We are in the Detroit area & we both work in the Automotive sector. It is getting really scary around here.

I am sorry. Each of you will be in our prayers.

My DH lost his job almost 4 weeks ago. Job elimination. It has happend so much in our county that it is getting really scarey.

We are not sure what we are going to do. DH has run the rollercoaster of emotions....anger, depressed, anxious, etc. I am really worried he is falling into a deep depression as he worries how to support a large family.

He was in high management and his age, a young 48, is not on our side. Our area does not have many opportunities. The kids (5 kids, aged 15, 14, 12, 10 & 7) are scared we are going to have to move.

I'm okay with moving but if there was anyway we could stay until the older 3 graduated high school.

The whole ecomony is really keeping me up at night. I cannot see how things are going to get better.

My big vote would be instead of stimulus pkgs going to certain companies, etc. that there would be a 1 yr federal tax holiday. Very low cost to implement. Everyone wins....err everyone with a job, and it would create the same deficiet in the fed budget. If I were queen.

We'll definately keep y'all in our thoughts and prayers.

We have 2 friends that have lost their jobs in the last 6 months. One was in sales (supplier to retailers) and the other one was a teacher.

Thank you all for sharing. My husband is in education. There are big cutbacks here in Florida and there may be furloughs. My main concern is for my son, though.

I am so sorry for all the job losses. Things do not seem to be getting better regarding the economy does it??? It is scary out there. I work for the state and my agency almost had to close down the last 2-3 months of this fiscal year (ending June 30). The governor bailed us out, but left us almost 2 million in the hole to start our new fiscal year beginning July 1st. The governor says our state is starting out July 1st with a 1 BILLION dollar deficit. So it doesn't look good and my agency may truly run out of money this fiscal year with no bail out available. This is first time I've ever been scared for my job as it is constitutionally mandated, but it is in jeopardy.

Things are tight everywhere. I think we are all in for a long, hard ride. :sad1:

Kay1 -- Many of my DH's co-workers in the newspaper business have been laid off or cut to part-time.

My oldest DS graduated with a BS in computer science from a good school over a year ago and has not found a professional job. There are so many IT people with years of experience being cut here that there's no reason to hire entry level kids.

My job was eliminated and I worked in the finance/mutual fund industry. I was in middle management but a lot of the entry level work has been shipped over seas to Mumbai, India over the last 3 years.

If my daughter was college age, I would encourage fields such as teaching (wish I had done that, as I would have the perfect mother's hours! LOL) or healthcare. Not only is healthcare relatively stable (there will always be people getting sick and old and also preventitive care is so important) but also healthcare offers a lot of flexibility in hours of work.

Anyways, hopefully this economy will turnaround.

I wish the government would give tax breaks or incentives to people who have been laid off to return to school to acquire new skills in growing/needed fields (green industries, healthcare, education)

I'm so sorry to hear of your husband's job loss. I hope that something great is right around the corner for him.

This is awful.. :( The loss of jobs continues - on and on..

Good luck to all of you who are having to deal with this..

My husband lost his job about 2 months ago. Thank goodness he saw it coming and started a home based business before the lay off which is doing pretty good. Hope your hubby finds something soon.
