My dad wanted me to ask the DIS experts a question about the Hubble: Why was there a handrail on it. I guess it's really been bugging him. His reasoning is that whent it was built, it was never meant to be serviced so why would the put a handrail on something they were sending into space to never touch again? Apparently it caused the astronauts on the latest mission quite a bit of grief and they ended up literally having to rip it off. He searched the net to find out why it was there on the first place if it was such a way, but couldn't find anything so he wanted me to ask you.

Wrong. Hubble was designed to be serviced. However, some of the repairs that were performed during this visit were not part of the original plans (i.e. the one where they had to remove a panel with 111 screws).
