Is anyone here a member and if so do you think it's worth it. I'm in NJ.

I think it is worth it because you never know what is going to happen and this way not only do they fight for us, but they keep us informed about upcoming issues we should be concerned about.

I'm in IN and not a member. I do like though that if you have problems they will fight for you. It's probably something I should be a member of but just haven't taken that step yet.

We have been homeschooling for 7 years, and we have been members since we started. I have only contacted them a couple of times to answer questions for me, but they were very informative. I would say that they are a great asset to have.

Wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole.

1 they are religious based and will not represent you if you are not Christian. They indorse many non-homeschool actions that are anti equality for women, minorities, same sex couples etc

2 they do not accept relaxed or unschoolers. On their application you must explain your curriculum and give explinations if you do not follow a regular school at home approach during typical school hours etc.

3 they will only represent you in matters against the public school system/government. They will not represent you in domestic matters concerning homeschooling

4 parts of their agenda/sponsoring of bills would make it hard for those who do not follow a strict school at home regime

***Agreed!***
The Home Education Magazine website has a LOT of well researched, interesting articles on the subject of HSLDA, none of it positive-
I recommend finding a homeschool group from your state, that really knows your local laws, and get all your info. from them-

I just found out about Home Education Magazine today. I sent for the free issue. If you subscribe is it interesting?

I love reading homeschool mags and such, and I consider Home ed magazine to be the best! enjoy! luckily, our local library carries it...

Interesting site. Thanks. I guess the Christian slant of HSLDA never bothered me since I heard about them through my state Christian homeschooling assoc. FWIW, I checked that we did not follow a traditional school day on my application and wrote in the explanation that we consider life to be a learning opportunity and we don't limit our learning to 9-3. On the application I did not see or fill out anything that asked about our curriculum, just a question if you followed the traditonal hours of schooling. However, in reading over the application I am not sure that I like how much information they ask for. Seems like a bit too much more than they should need.

I plan to do some further reading and see what I think. I had heard one of their lawyers speak a few years ago and that is when I joined. I will need to educate myself further and make sure this is something I want to do.

Oh, I would say that I certainly would not expect them to represent anyone unless it pertained to an infringement of homeschooling rights.
