Yes, the cooling system. :) Someone else just posted air is working now, but rides still down. Shops and restaurants stayed open.

The article states some have said the power is out, and that there are power outages in some areas.

What is different? ......

Did I do that?

huh?

A fb friend just posted this...so I guess it makes sense for other parks to be busier.

Just back to our hotel - went right to concierge and they knew about the situation, and comped the three in our party with an extra day, which already showed on MDX

Interesting - whenever I talk about power issues at Disney, people jump all over me and say that they have plenty of power, their own generator system, power plant, dedicated this and that, etc. Wonder why none of that is working?

So, yes, in Lake Buena Vista is the Reedy Creek Cogeneration facility, which provides thermal and electrical energy to Walt Disney World. However, it only provides about 55MW of the estimated 196MW the RCID needs. The rest of it is purchased.

Just curious, what is there to talk about regarding the power issues?

I had posted about outages during hurricanes, or at other times, and was told over and over again that Disney was well equipped to keep everything going on its own, and that there'd never be a power outage at WDW. And then there was!

I see. As posted previously, RCID/Disney purchases most of it's power from an outside source(s) and is subject to whatever happens to that source.

A cast member who I consider in the know explained it to me before (in the context of a hurricane). Disney World has its own backup systems that can make it self-reliant even if power goes out around it. They have the means to support people sheltering there, keep the lights on, and provide services -- but these systems aren't designed to meet all of the power needs, like running power hungry attractions. Roller coasters are probably not meant to run on backup power.

If someone said there'd never be a power outage at WDW, I think they're exaggerating. I speculate that there's nothing magical about even Disney's power systems that make them better protected from disruptions than any other equipment. We know that power failures do happen. I've even been in a brief one at WDW.

I'm not totally clear what "cooling system" means in yesterday's news, though. Cooling system doesn't necessarily mean air conditioning or electrical system. Perhaps Hollywood Studios is set up like other theme parks, where multiple attractions rely on a centralized master control computer to operate -- and that system had a cooling issue? I have no idea about this though.
