My printer's printhead is dead and it costs almost as much as a new printer to purchase a new one. I went shopping last night and was intrigued by hp's new instant ink program where I will pay a monthly fee and it ships me ink as I run out. It's supposed to be up to a 50% savings. However, I'm finding it hard to compare with how often I would purchase other ink cartridges for a different brand.

My current printer costs $70 to replace the ink in total. It has separate cartridges for each color. I found it to be very costly so I bought generic cartridges but I think that's what killed the printhead.

I also have a Brother laser printer since we print a lot of black & white. So we no longer go through the expensive cartridges as before. But I need a color printer on occasion.

I just don't know if this program will be a headached or a blessing!

The middle plan works out to 5 cents a page which is ridiculously cheap for full color. Since they limit the printers I'd be concerned with quality. I would probably buy one and try it out for a week or two. If it was a dog I'd return it. If it worked out $60 for a year of ink or 1200 pages in color is good. Even if you added in the cost of the printer $160 for 1200 color images isn't bad that's 13 cents. Around here you can't copy or print a color image for 13 cents
