Oh! Louisiana! Home of Lake Ponchartrain - according to a contestant on The Amazing Race Family Edition a few seasons back... one of the GREAT LAKES!!!!
See my avatar? You can indicate all the states you've visited. Know why Hawaii's NOT on there? It's actually for RV owners/users and, as the creator points out... you're right, shortbun - Hawaii ISN'T drivable
Well, those of from there think the lake is pretty great. LOL!! I spent many an afternoon sailing on it when I was in college. But, no, not one of THE Great Lakes. There's no "P" in HOMES.
I have noticed your avatar. I know a few DISers have it. I've always liked it and wondered where you found it.
It is the same thing as not knowing where the Poconos are and you are assuming her accent is NY and even if it is, it doesn't mean that she is familiar with PA. The Eagle Mountain I was referring to is in MN. Just because it is familiar to you doesn't mean everyone in the world should know.
How about the Mall of America, that is pretty famous, do you know what town that is in without looking it up?
Yes, I know the Mall of America is in Minnesota. I'm pretty darn certain its near Minneapolis/St. Paul. Could I tell you that exact town, nope! But I can certainly get you in the correct region of the country and the correct state.
As for her NYC accent, I have lived in this area my entire life. I have worked in NYC for over 20 years. My aunt and uncle have very strong accents. If she didn't have one, she was doing an incredible impression of one.
And I asked the question because I rather assumed that the Pocono Mountain region was somewhat well known. The people that have posted on this thread seem to have gotten the general area, if not the exact location, correct. Heck, I was even looking to have people recognize it as part of the country. I'm not trying to sound superior to anyone. My apologies to you if I came off that way. I love to learn and I love to learn about different places. And quite frankly, I was rather shocked.
I think that if you asked around, you would find that of most Americans who are not from the general area, the most likely to know where and what the Poconos are are married women. And the reason for that is .... BRIDAL MAGAZINES!!! The various Poconos honeymoon resorts are probably some of the biggest buyers of advertising in those publications. If you've read a bridal magazine, you've at least heard of the Poconos. (I worked in the wedding industry for years, but in Louisiana -- we often had debates on whether or not anyone actually WENT to those resorts; they looked so bizarre based on the ads.)
And speaking of Louisiana and geography, I can't count the number of times that I gave a Louisiana address to some stranger over the phone and heard a comment on how well I spoke English.
I was going to a teacher interview in Virgina. I decided to take a friend along and we drove from Ohio. Somewhere in Pennsylvania she exclaims, "The mountains are so pretty! I've always wanted to see the ALPS!"
