While I was reviewing my phone bill today I noticed that I was charged for 5 collect calls from the 570 area code (PA). So I call the phone company as DH and I do not know anyone currently residing in the Poconos. I believe there is something hinky going on with my DSD (not living with us) as she used to live up there. But that's a whole other thread. :rotfl2:

Anyway, I called the phone company and asked to have a block on all collect and third party calls to my number. Okay, so far so good. She tries to figure out how to do that and she is obviously having some difficulties. Finally she just blurts out "Oh, I can't figure it out so I'll just put an international block on your phone!" I told her not to do this as I work for an international company and I need to call and be called by people in France at times. And then I asked "Why would you block internationally?" Her response "I don't know where the Poconos are?" :scared1:

The woman was definitely American and sounded very much like a NYer. So my question to the great Dis community is "Do you know where the Poconos are located?"

General area - Northeast, specific states ermmmm, no

The "the" kind of gave it away :). Like the Rockies, the Smokies, the Appalachains, the Alps, the Andes. Lakes would have been my second guess - like the Everglades. Or maybe it could have been a town - like The Hague, The Colony, etc. I was pretty sure it wasn't islands :teeth:.

Try living in a STATE that people constantly think is not part of the U.S. ;) New Mexicans always have a difficult time with that kind of thing.

I have a rough idea of where the Poconos are but I wouldn't have been 100% that they were ONLY in Pennsylvania. A lot of mountain ranges spread out over more than one state.

As a jersey girl with both sets of grandparents from Wilkes Barre I DO know where the poconos are.

Yes. They are in PA on the northeastern side next to NJ. Many people from NYC commute from there.

One of my favorite hotels is in the Poconos. I haven't been there since I was a kid, but I know where they are.

I had to laugh at the PP from NM. I lived in Albuquerque for a while and once when I was on the phone for something and a woman was reading back my address she was stumped at the NM. She paused and asked... North Maine? :rotfl: When it comes to geography, little surprises me anymore.

I can relate to the pp's who mentioned something about NM - my DH is from New Mexico and he has heard it all. One girl I worked with asked where my DH was from and when I told her she said "wasn't he scared living in another country" um no since NM is in this country and if he WAS from Mexico that wouldn't be another country to him. (He is of Irish and German ancestry)

So yeah I think people these days either didn't pay attention in school or weren't taught these things - and I am thinking its more that it was taught just not retained!! Oh and I know where the Poconos are - never been there but I at least know they are in the Northeastern area of USA - don't alot of people vacation there?

:thumbsup2 Love it there too!! Used to go skiing around those parts and loved staying at this one hotel/ resort that had champagne glasses for a spa/ hot tub, it was lovely!

Of course I know where they are. And I live in Oregon... btw,it's INSANE how many people cannot properly pronounce Oregon (that's our annoying geography issue).

I don't know if a lot of people on the west coast would know about the Poconos, we have our own mountainous regions to worry about ;). I think more people know that they're definitely in the US, just maybe not what states they're in.

THIS!!!

Lots of people I have met in various places seem to think Arizona and Texas border each other with nothing in between. I remember a couple of times calling a CC company being transferred to the international department because the CS rep didn't know that New Mexico is in fact a state and not the country Mexico.

I actually had never heard of the Poconos until joining these boards.

And most people know nothing about AZ except for Scottsdale (not necessarily Phoenix) and the Grand Canyon. It baffles me.

I live in Maryland and have been to a wedding in the Poconos so sure I know where it is.

It's the holy land for old Jewish comedians. :rotfl2:
