My husband and I will be going to Disneyland in November, the day before Thanksgiving, with our two daughters (ages 7 & 9). I cannot decide between the Howard Johnson and the Candy Cane Inn. They are pretty similar in price. Are they clean and well maintainted? Are they pools nice? If you have been to both which one would you recommend?

I haven't stayed at either, but in July for the big Laughing Place meet a TON of members stayed at Howard Johnson's and they can't stop raving about it. I have NEVER heard a bad review about them and I do know that you can get a frig and microwave at Hojo's. I'd check them out!

<font color=navy>The Candy Cane Inn is probably the most sought-after & popular of the local hotels/motels to stay at. It's quaint, serves continental breakfast, and has a nice pool area. It's one, maybe two-story (I can't remember right now). Candy Cane Inn sits on Harbor Blvd., near the corner for Katella. There's a little market there, and it's on the same side of the street as Disneyland Resort. The walk is perhaps 5-10 minutes, or you can take the ART.

Howard Johnsons is much bigger, and has interior corridors, and sits on Harbor Blvd, next to the 5 Fwy. They have a pool that was just refurbished, which includes a wading pool, a turtle squirting out water, and a jacuzzi. It's across the street from the DLR, and well within walking distance, I wouldn't even bother with the shuttle. If you get a room facing the DLR you could see the fireworks at night. However, if you get a room in the back, you overlook the freeway, and I've heard that you might hear fwy noise (I don't know if it's true, but I would just ask for a room facing DLR).

Although a LOT of people rave about the Candy Cane Inn, I would recommend Howard Johnsons. There are a lot of off-site eateries within walking distance of HoJo's, too.

Of course, this is just my HO.

We haven't stayed at HoJo's, but you can't go wrong with Candy Cane. The customer service is fabulous.

I have stayed at both and like both. Candy Cane Inn is prettier with better decorated rooms though the rooms are smaller. Candy cane Inn is a 2 story U shaped motel with exterior corridors. The pool is small but in a pretty garden setting. The free breakfast is very good.
Howard Johnson has bigger though blander rooms but has interior corridors and most rooms have balconies. Parking may not be quite as convenient and there is no free breakfast but it is usually less expensive than the Candy Cane.
Both are clean with comfortable rooms and similar walking times to the parks.
If you want a pretty somewhat themed atmosphere, go for Candy Cane. If the atmosphere is not a big deal and you want a balcony go to HOJO.

Having just returned from a stay at the Candy Cane I can report on a couple of the details. The distance from the gate to either hotel appears to be about the same to me. The Candy Cane Inn has its own shuttle which runs every 30 minutes (or more) and is free. Howard Johnson's uses the ART which costs $3 per person per day. You can walk of course, but it's nice to have the shuttle option. It is about a 7 minute walk to the Candy Cane.

The Candy Cane Inn is a two story hotel with outside entrances. The grounds are heavily planted with all types of tropical flowering plants and are quite pretty. The pool is small but nice and again surrounded by lots of flowers. A free breakfast is provided at the Candy Cane every day including muffins, bagels, cold cereal, instant oatmeal, toast, fruit, juice, milk, coffee. It is served near the pool area.

The Candy Cane Inn is very well maintained, super clean, and service is very responsive. The larger rooms accommodate a rollaway which is actually quite comfortable! Rooms all have refrigerators, and some have microwaves.
