I am a new Grandpa and already planning my Grandsons first trip to WDW. The problem is that I'm not sure when would be the best age for his first trip.

My DW and I have never traveled with kids and certainly not with very young kids.

So when is the best age for their first trip :confused3

We want it to be fun and memorable for my grandson as well as Mom and Dad.

Thanks for the help :thumbsup2

I told my kids I would take them when my youngest was old enough to remember the trip, which turned out to be age 5...then we had another child several years later and has been since he was a baby so that didn't exactly work out the way I had planned it LOL If you are going for your own enjoyment, to see the look in his eyes, etc. then whatever age you feel comfortable taking him...but if you are going for him I would say around 4 or 5.

If you really want a child to have memories of the trip itself, and not just enjoy their time at the parks, then age 5 at about a minimum. Would Mom and Dad be coming along too? If not, then certainly no younger, IMO.

OH YEAH, I'm not sure we have what it takes to make that trip without them :lmao:

We took our first family trip with DD and fil at 1! and almost every year since lol!

I guess it depends on the family! but my dd was in awe at disney at 1 and having "grandpapa" there for the first trip was awesome! So many wonderful baby pictures in her baby book! :)

She really was able to enjoy more last year at 4! they had a blast running together to every ride!

Since i lost both of my parents i say why wait! :) jmo

Really, it's a matter of your own taste and preference. We've taken our twins to WDW since they were 7 months old and have loved each and every trip. They are now almost 5 and we continue to love our trips to Disney. Even though the twins don't remember the trips when they were babies, we remember the trips and I wouldn't trade the memories for anything in the world.

We went 2 years ago when the kids were just almost 3 and 4.5
They had a blast but were afraid of alot of the rides that were dark! Like my favorite peter pan, and the snow white.
But seeing the look on their faces when they saw the whole thing. Was great.
We are going in a week and the kids now will be 5 and 6.5 and 16 months.
I was really wanting to wait till the youngest was older but also wanted the kids to be still at that age of amazement. Like my dd with the princesses!

We took DD at 10 months and she had a blast. Granted she doesn't remember, but she loves to look at the pictures. We are taking her back in May at 22 months.

Hi,

A new grandson! How wonderful! Congratulations! I can see he is one lucky baby to have such a thoughtful Grandpa! I think once a baby can really smile anytime after that can be "the best vacation ever!". The most important thing to remember is to take lots of pictures of him doing the things that please him most. While a baby won't remember the trip, he can memorize it through the pictures you take. We put photos in a fabric soft-sided baby approved photo album (which I bought in our local BabiesRUs) and let our girls keep it in their toy box. As they grew it amazed us how often they picked it out of the toybox and asked to hear their "stories" about the pictures. Your grandson will know what he did on his vacation if you tell him all about it as he grows. This really extends the magic for me and makes me so thankful I didn't wait a minute longer.

One thing I have noticed is that every trip seems to take on a life of its own, as my girls have gotten older. When my girls were really little we tended to make sure we saw the parade everyday. We did character breakfasts and dinners. We went on Dumbo 5 times. The carousel 5 times. They loved the repetition. You can always take them again when they are older...but you can never take them again when they were younger. :upsidedow

Let him take the lead, he will let you know when he is getting tired or has had enough for the day. If you follow his cues you all can still do heaps of other things after taking a break back at your hotel or in one of the baby care centers. All of the parks have clean, friendly and air conditioned baby care centers that are equipped with highchairs, changing tables, child sized toilets, rocking chairs. They also sell baby supplies, if needed.

On your trip, be sure to catch up with Mickey and Pooh. You could also start a new tradition by taking his picture in a favorite spot of yours. Every time you return you can take a new picture and see how he has grown.

I feel I should mention this one thing...there is a proportional relationship between child's age and amount of stuff you have to bring to Florida and carry around in the parks. :rotfl: (All of the hotels do have portacribs available. Just let them know you need one when you make your reservation. Also let them know you will need a high chair when you make your dining reservations. Consider calling the hotel and asking them the best way for you to ship stuff to yourself before you go so you don't have to bring it on the plane and it is waiting for you at the hotel when you arrive.) Bring the baby's regular canopied stroller. If it is a dark fabric, consider bringing a white cloth to cover the seat before you put him in as this will help keep him cooler.

He will let you know what he needs, don't worry, you will have a fabulous time!

We took our children for the first time at ages 3 & 5. I wanted to wait until my 3 yr old was fully potty trained, communicating & had some endurance. This age worked well for us and most afternoons she'd take an hour long nap in the Disney stroller. She looks through our Disney photos quite often & I am constantly surprised at how much she remembers from our trip.

Congratulations on your new grandson!!

We went when our kids were 2, 3.5 and 5. That was Sept 2005 and they have only vague memories. Good thing we are going again in November. We did get the 2 year old completely potty trained on that trip, though!:)

I forgot to mention this Dumbo trick that will come in handy. When you go to Dumbo have adult #1 get in line with the baby. Adult #2 should enter the line 24 people later and then adult #3 24 people after that, and so on. Then the baby can ride with adult #1 and be passed over to adult #2 as #1 exits the ride and so forth. With 4 adults doint this, the baby could get 4 rides on Dumbo with a total wait time not that much longer than one start to finish wait. I recommend visiting Dumbo first thing in the morning as it's line moves slowly because only a couple of dozen people may ride at one time.

Have a great trip!

My DS17 first went to WDW at three months, my DD13 at nine months, and my DD3.5 at fifteen months. My DD13 remembers going at 20 months at the very youngest, while my two others remember going at 2.5.

We took ds to WDW at 13mos, 17mos, 21mos, and 23mos... and he's been several times since then. Each trip is a little different since he is a little older and his interests change over time. I think before he was two, we really enjoyed the trips at 21 and 23mos the best (plus they get in free at this age!). This was the age where he really started noticing the characters and wanted to hug and kiss all of them. He was a lot more interactive at this age. I don't think you can really go wrong at any age. I agree if it's a once in a lifetime trip, to wait to 4-5yrs of age. If you're going to go again, then I'd say go when he's a toddler. It's a really cute age for the parks imo. Maybe he won't remember it but you will.

We went to Disneyland last Dec. for my daughter's 3rd birthday. My son had just turned 4.5 and she had just turned 3. My son enjoyed the trip a lot more. She just didn't "get it" yet. My son showed a lot of patience, curiosity and general enjoyment for what we were doing. This was their first trip and I was very excited to go. I am still glad that we went, but I think that 4 and older would be best. Just my opinion. Congrats on being a grandpa!
