Well, it's a weird thing. Noel in Christmas terms is no-el, but in name terms is nole.

I have only ever known one Noel who goes be "nole" the others (several) have gone be no-el. Maybe that is more regional

and that name, I am pretty sure that one almost rhymes with Eve. Neev. But I have heard it before, one of the people who works at the local German American Library has that name. I don't speak to her, or about her, often enough to be sure of how her name sounds, but I think that is it. Just don't ask me to spell it if I am not looking at it somewhere.

LOL! My sister (born in 1977) is JAIME also. And...our mom named her after Jaime Sommers as well. Now why she couldn't have named her Lindsay after Lindsay Wagner, the actress who played her, I'll never understand, but people ALWAYS spell her name Jamie...

DD went to grade school with a girl named Jammie - which she pronounced Jamie. She would blow up anytime a sub or anyone called her Jammie - like the fruity spread - which is how her name is spelled.

The anger needed to be directed at her parents IMO.

I believe it's generally NEEV, although in some regions they add a schwa in there, so it's NEE-AV. There's an actress named Niamh Cusack - she played Kate in Heartbeat and Beatrix Potter in The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends.

A lot of these differences that people are complaining about are due to variation (whether regional, social or other). For instance, for some people, MARY, MERRY and MARRY have merged, but for others they still sound different. Or for me, as an Australian, it is strange to hear the name CRAIG pronounced so it rhymes with GREG (for me, the vowel is like CRAY) or hearing that AARON and ERIN pronounced the same (for me, the former has an a sound, like in CAT and the latter has an e sound like in BED). We can't say that one group is right and the other is wrong, they are just variations based on factors like where they and their parents lived, what school they went to, whether they were upper or lower class, etc.

Niamh is normally pronounced "neev", though accents can affect it a bit, as an above poster noted. (That also happens to Caoimhe; normally it is KEE-va, but in certain parts of Ireland you will occasionally hear "KWEE-va"; it happens because of the local Irish accent.)

Niamh was my late daughter's name; for the fairy of Tir na nÓg.

i ask because its my name and almost everyone i encounter pronounces it wrong.
and everyone seems to have a completely different wrong way of pronouncing it.

i really got to thinking about it today cuz i went to one of my doctors and he butchers it soooo bad that i never know if he is calling me or not.
there have been times where he will come out and walk over to me and gesture to me to come instead of attempt to say my name.
