How would you handle this?

Just curious. Okay, so more venting than curious, I guess. In both the town that I live and in the bigger town that I work, we have a fairly large percentage of Mexicans. Now, this has increased dramatically in probably the last five years.

You hear a lot of "Well, you know, with all the *whisper* Mexicans *unwhisper* moving in." or "There's so many Mexicans in my daughters class now, the whites are almost the minority now"

Now, while they don't come out and say something negative about the Mexican community, you can just tell by the tone of the voice that they are not approving.

So, do you be nice and say something like "I don't really think that's a problem as my husband is Mexican." or do you go the sarcastic route and say "Yea, those Mexicans are a real problem, especially the one I'm married to!!"

Yes, it drives me crazy, I feel my kids are getting very mixed signals from the people they hear talk like that! I mean they hear whites (which they are) talk disprovingly of Mexicans (which they are also). They probably let it roll in one ear and out the other, and I make a bigger deal out of it than them.

Those people are clods. I would definitely use your sarcastic response:

"Yea, those Mexicans are a real problem, especially the one I'm married to!!"

It will definitely shut them up & I think it's a great comeback!!! :rotfl:

I would also tell your children that there are rude & niave people in the world & that, unfortunately, they judge people by how the look instead of getting to know them.

Sad as it is, you'll probably be able to use this as a teaching tool to teach your children tolerance of others that aren't exactly like them. Sad that we still have to do that now-a-days.

I agree with Melanie. That comeback will shut them up and probably make them feel like real jerks - which is, exactly what they are pretty much. ;)

I agree with this post. Ignorance seems to overcome more than anything.
It is very sad.

They'd never hack it in North Texas, which also has an extremely high Mexican population. :snooty:

I am pretty sure I would go the snarky route, I know that is a big shocker, LOL ;)

Sorry you are dealing with people like that.
