I'm so glad he agreed! My MIL had been in rehab and hated it. The second time she had to go she tried to refuse going, despite us (SIL who she lived with, me who was traveling to their state to help with her AND both my elderly parents who lived in the same town, and DH who was still trying to actually work full time in our state while dealing with the mess of 3 parents in crisis) simply not being able to manage her care. She kept insisting she could manage on her own until the day before she was to leave the hospital and realized she couldn't. We did promise her we'd get her home as soon as possible and she left after about a week when we felt like we could realistically manage.
Make sure to check into free medical equipment rentals in your community for when he comes home. Shower chairs, toilet risers, potty chairs, even walkers, wheelchairs, etc. In our community the Rotary club does it, in our hometown it's a private company, but it's all free. We eventually had a bunch of stuff we had purchased for long term use that we were able to donate when all our parents passed. Since going through this myself, taking care of the getting and returning the rentals is something I've volunteered to do for friends going through this to take something off their plate.
For anyone else dealing with this sort of thing that might be reading....Honestly, with my parents there were times I literally allowed myself to cry in front of them to get them to understand. I think we try so hard to act like nothing is an imposition because we don't want them to feel bad. There is a time when you have to get real. After my dad and mil were gone and I was still driving 400 miles back and forth, I literally broke down in tears in front of mom and that's what got her to agree to move near me.
