How will we know (re: positive cases)?

If DCL is currently running 3 and 4-day cruises and COVID symptoms typically take about 5 days to appear, how will we know how good of a job DCL’s practices are doing in mitigating any spread? I’m not trying to sound snarky in any way here. I’m truly wondering if there’s something I’m missing that has to report/circulate this info, and/or if DCL will still contact guests who may have been exposed, even after the guests have left the ship. I suppose one way would be # of staff members positive, assuming they are a fair “slice” of the ship, but there’s also factors that make staff different enough from guests that would make that stat unreliable. Any thoughts on this?

We will not know and without shutting everything down spread will happen. Disney is doing a fairly good job with really only daily testing and masks everywhere being a improved way of curbing potential spread imo (similar to sports leagues last year).

If people have an issue with the risk then they should take the outs when provided to cancel their cruises.

I will say based on everything I see though its a step up from other lines which are having 50/60/70% with limited mask requirements (well now some are requiring masks in more locations). Not sure I saw numbers on the current cruise but think it was like 33% on the first cruise and 25% on the second cruise for capacity.

The CDC has a colour coded system for the ships to say there safety status with regards to COVID-19 cases. I noticed the Disney Wonder was Orange status that says its being monitored, has anyone heard anything about cases on the Wonder or why the CDC is monitoring it? I heard about this website from a Cruise youtuber.

Yup, you won’t know. That’s probably WHY they’re sticking with 3/4 day cruises for now.

It may because new crew are coming aboard. They are going to be heading west soon.

Disney does what it can with all available information. They could be like other places and just rely on temperature checks. The reduced days, as you said should limit the number of cases on board. The enhanced cleaning, social distancing and mask wearing should help keep thing from spreading on the ship. The real concern would be the crew on board and the crew on Castaway Cay. I just hope that everyone realizes that the crew is usually from a different country and have families to support, they are risking their health to get us back to cruising so maybe a little extra love could be presented if you afford it.

The Delta variant is so much more virulent that people start showing symptoms in as little as 48 hours after exposure. This is why the new guidance is to test 3-5 days after exposure.

On a 3 night cruise it is very possible for people to test negative at boarding and positive by night 2 or 3.

My husband tested positive 2 days after contact with someone with covid. He went to an outdoor gathering Friday afternoon, maskless. By Sunday afternoon he had symptoms and tested positive using a rapid test. I was surprised by the speed of his symptom onset. He is vaccinated, by the way.

How is he doing?

How is he doing?

He is okay, thank you. We went to the beach yesterday and he was 100% fine. By the time we got home, he had a sudden onset of severe congestion in his ears and nose and sounded all stuffed up. He felt feverish and had a temp of 100.0. We whipped out the test kit and it turned positive immediately. Thankfully we had some test kits at home. I tested negative and we immediately isolated him and I went to work cleaning the house like a crazy person. However, the kids and I were clearly already exposed so now we wait. We are all vaccinated, but we know how well that works at this point.

He already feels better today. Still some lingering congestion but nothing else besides boredom at being in Covid jail, basically.

Plausible Deniability- same theory as the theme parks can’t confirm or deny you got exposed within the confines of property
It's mostly this, but on other cruises people seem to be finding out about clusters of cases by talking amongst themselves on the Facebook groups for each individual sailing. I don't expect the cruise lines to be especially proactive about reaching out once passengers are off the ship.

Thanks for sharing this! Will be interesting to monitor.

I clicked through to find the threshold info:
Orange Ship Criteria
  • COVID-19 or CLI has been reported in the past 7 days, and the ship is below CDC’s investigation threshold:
    • Restricted Voyages:
      • Cases reported in less than 0.10% of passengers (e.g., if 6500* passengers are on board, it would take at least 7 passenger-cases during the previous 7 days to meet CDC’s investigation threshold), and
      • No crew cases reported.
    • Simulated Voyages:
      • Cases reported in less than 1.5% of passengers, and
      • Cases reported in less than 1.0% of crew.
    • Ships with Crew Only (i.e., not yet submitted requests for simulated voyages or applications for restricted voyages, pending CDC approval, or sailing at a later date).
      • Cases reported in less than 1.0% of crew.

There won't be official tracking once passengers debark. Contact tracing isn't doing that tight job; in fact I'm not sure many states are still doing much (if any) contact tracing. There is no obligation that a passenger report health status once they leave the ship. Passengers will scatter across the US and internationally. Many if not most will use airlines, possibly hotels, WDW, restaurants, etc. No way to directly tie an illness to the ship at that point.

Both my parents had covid in July of 2020. Both had symptoms on day 2. Same for my son. Was exposed on a Friday night. Sick on Sunday. I don’t know of anyone who showed symptoms on day 4. With a 4 night cruise, the symptoms could show up during the cruise.
