How & when do we tell DS he has AS?

My DD fell right off of the scale at 2 yo, and we had a fantastic family friend that had a masters in Early childhood development who quickly identified we had a special child on our hands ( although we didn't do a formal diagnosis process until 7 we qualified on under just all of the "delay" catagories). By 2 1/2, she was getting early intervention at our County's Child Development center......then transitioned into the at risk pre-school program....then to a fabulous private school. We were able to petition to have on-site speech therapy provided from out local school district during her K-2 exprience at the private school.....and transitioned to Public school for 3 rd grade.
She progressed well , and her team suggested that for 5th grade we drop her IEP and instead write an accomadation plan. So, I took a deep breath and used the summer between 4th and 5th grade to teach her about her "challenge", and work with her to become her own advocate in writing her accomadation plan. We used many books, but there was one book that was so wonderfull, it was a book of letters writen by a Grandfather to is Grandson "Charlie". I will look for it after i get back from work, and post the name.
This time frame worked for us.

Tara - and any other New England families touched by Asperger's/autism -

I would suggest a wonderful resource - the Asperger's Association of New England (AANE). They do have a website and are very helpful to families seeking information, support, and encouragement.
