How well-equipped is the medical center?

I am wondering what kind of situations the medical center can handle, and when it would be necessary to send a guest off the ship. I am assuming the doctor can give someone a prescription for a drug such as penicillin, is this correct? If a broken bone is suspected, can an X-ray be taken and can the bone be set? What if someone were to require that an antibiotic be administered through an I.V., would this person be sent to the nearest hospital? What if it happened to be a day at sea? Is there only one doctor on the ship?

We have cruised DCL twice, but for some reason these issues never concerned me before! If anyone has any experience with the medical center, I would really appreciate your input! Thanks!

Little do you know, mouseclick.

The medical facility is quite comprehensive by cruise ship standards. Yes, they can prescribe medications, take x-rays, administer IVs, etc. There is at least one doctor and several nurses and support staff onboard. For emergencies they are not equipped to handle, the ship will dock at the nearest port.

When I popped off my kneecap, they were able to respond very well. It happened during the 70s party, so the medical center was closed, but a doctor and two nurses came immediately. They were able to start an I.V. and put the kneecap back in place. They had a good selection of equipment on board (i.e. crutches and cast), and when I went to my ortho. doc back home, he said they had done a very good job.

Both DS and I got them ( on different days) gave us both anitbiotics and motrin, told me if the pain got worse they would give me something stronger for the plane ride home (unneccessary) called the next day (both times) to follow up on us. Free recheck visit. Very professional!
