How to write on a fruit roll-up?

This is a weird place to ask but I don't know where else to do it. I'm planning a spy kind of thing for some 8 - 10 yr. old boys and want to write their secret mission on a note that they will then eat - thus the fruit roll-up idea. How could a person write on one so it lasts and doesn't smear but isn't toxic?

Or do you have a better edible note idea?

I just saw at the grocery store edible paint markers in the baking aisle.
Not sure how they work, I was just glancing at the display. But the picture was of it being used to write Happy Birthday on the frosting of a cake. I think it's just food dye in a more easily used pen shape.
That could work and make for some very interesting colored tongues! That's always a crowd pleaser!

I would look in a craft store or somewhere that has cake decorating supplies. Wilton is a popular brand that comes to mind. They should have something you can use.

You could also just scribe the fruit roll-ups then give them the sercret liquid (contrasting food coloring).When they put some of the food coloring it should show in the scribed area and and wipe off the rest to reviel the message.

I know in the cake section they have markers to write on fondant icing. I have never tried it, but I am sure they work fine. I am pretty sure that Wilton is the one who makes them.

You can also find a box of small tubes of icing at Michael's (in the cake dec. aisle) to write on cookies. Dries immediately and thin enough not to break when writing letters.
