One note, once you've reached your 10 posts, it does take the system a little while l(30-60 minutes) to recognize the fact and activate the ability to add an avatar, or start a conversation.

To start a conversation, click on the username or avatar of the person you want to converse with. There's a link there "Start a conversation".

Or, hover over the "Inbox" link in the upper right and click on "Start a new conversation" there.
