How would you split the cost of a car rental between one family that has mother/father/9 year old child and another family with only one adult in it? Four ways, three ways or two ways? Thanks

The one adult pays 25% of the cost? Who initiated the rental? Who asked who on the trip? What is it for?

Personally, when we go to FL and drive and my SIL goes along we don't ask for any payment or sharing. She does always offer. But, she always buys my kids things, makes car kits for them, babysits for free, usually buys a snack/meal for all of us and etc. We were going anyway...

50/50

But I always rent so if my sister was coming along like she did last August, I would ask her for any money.

Would you be going even if the other adult isn't going?

Depending on how long the trip is, what about asking for the other adult to just pay for gas. That could add up fast these days.

When my mom goes along, she just pays for a tank of gas or 2 because we would be going anyway with or without her.

Just a thought.

I would agree that it depends on the situation and the relationship. Would you be getting the same car with or without the extra adult? If so, I'd pay 100% and not ask for the other person to chip in, though wouldn't refuse if they wanted to contribute or pay for gas or parking or something like that. If you would not be getting the car, or maybe getting a smaller/cheaper model, then I might ask the extra person to chip in to cover the difference.

I don't think it would be fair to expect a single person to cover more than 25% if you want to split it.

If I was getting the same car that I would have gotten anyway then I would not ask the extra person for any money. If they offered money then I would probably suggest that they cover some of the gas. If having an extra person caused me to get a larger car then I might ask them to chip in.

If you and the other adult are going to be worried about the "fairness" of all splits this could be a LONG vacation LOL!

I agree it's either 50/50 or nothing. I have gone as the extra adult. I normally just rent my own car as I don't want to go thur the trip like it's a three legged race!

We had my Sis join us this year at DW. We would have had a car w/out her, but needed to get a minivan w/her, so she paid the difference between the car and minivan. If we wouldn't have needed a bigger vehicle I would not have asked her to pay anything. She also paid half of one of the 2 rooms and bought her own theme park tickets and meals.

I'd add up all of the ages of each of the occupants and then charge each person their proportionate share.

For example:

Family #1: DH 35, DW 35, DS 9 = 79
Family #2: DAdult 35 = 35
Total = 114

Family #1 would pay 79/114 or 69%
Family #2 would pay 35/114 or 31%

OK, never mind... split it 50/50. :rotfl:

Depends on the relationship and situation. I usually travel solo, but split rental car/taxi costs with others 50/50 unless a special vehicle is needed to accommodate a family member.

We generally set ground rules well in advance of any trips so we don't quibble over everything. It doesn't end up being exactly 50/50, but it's close enough that we don't fuss! :)

If there is already arguing about the fair way to split the cost (and I know you didn't say there was, but IF) I would get my own car and not worry about saving the money. Sometimes pice of mind is worth more than money saved.

MY BIL travels with us for many of our trips. We are me, DH and DD (10). We usually split 50/50. Here's my reasoning:
1) Without him, we could probably squeeze into an economy or small car - whereas, with him we've found we need a full size,
2) If he didn't ride with us, he'd have to rent his own - or use a shuttle. Of course now the shuttles (ME ) are free so I don't know if he would opt for that.
3) Most of the time, I get pretty good prices on rental cars - This October, $108 for full size for a week - all taxes included.

BTW - He also pays 50% of room cost, which I base on beds. DH and I get 1, BIL gets the other. DD is put on an air mattress on the floor (usually much to her disappointment) LOL!

Do you mind telling where and how you got $108 for week in Oct . Best I got was 132 for small SUV for week and was thrilled. Carol :earsgirl:

::yes::
Family #1: DH 35, DW 35, DS 9 = 79

Family #1 would pay 79/114 or 69%

OK, never mind... split it 50/50.

Another vote for 50/50
