How to speed recovery of a canker sore

Sensodyne toothpaste will reduce canker sores.
Cutting back on foods like cheese, chocolate, orange juice and tomatoes will also help reduce the occurence of canker sores (but then what would be the point of living?)
Abreva will not help a canker sore go away.
Stress also riles up canker sores--I used to get them EVERY semester during final exams.
Last year I got something that made canker sores in my mouth and throat. I believe the doctor said it was stomatitis. It was going around. I had one on my tonsil. It was AGONY. I tried everything. I got some Nystatin from the doctor (FOUL stuff) and swished and swallowed as directed. It became less painful in 24 hours. BUT this does not work on my regular, run-of-the mill canker sores. I know because I've tried.

I usually take a little bit of cornstarch--yes cornstarch that you use for cooking and baking--and put it over the sore. I have to reapply, of course, but it always clears them up. :flower:

God, I had this last year. I had this big white "patch" on my tonsil. And my tonsil swelled. I immediately thought I had tonsillitis. I went to an urgent care clinic and they told me I had a throat virus. A few days later I happened to be at my endo's office on a thyroid visit and I showed him my tonsil. He gave me an antibiotic, which did not good. But as the "thing" started to get better and shrink, I realized that it was three canker sores that had melded into one huge one. It was one of the most painful things I have ever dealt with.

As others have said before use L-lysine. If you use it daily you'll not have to worry about what you eat as far as things like tomatoes. My BIL also uses it during stressful times to prevent the sores too.

L-lysine can be found at drug stores and even WalMart!

DS used to get canker sores all the time, until our pediatrician recommended a 50-50 solution of maalox and benadryl. Maalox coats it and helps cure it by cutting the acidity (I think that's how) and the benadryl, I think, helps with the discomfort. He never got canker sores that lasted after he discovered that!

I did read about that on the internet but I never got the idea of how to prepare the solution. So you just mix it up and swish it in your mouth or do you "paint" it on the canker sore?

He just swished it around like mouthwash for 30 seconds, then spit it out.
