Albatross, A ocean bird that was often seen as a bad omen and cause for anxiety (see The Rime of the Ancient Mariner).

Argh!, The standard pirate greeting, like "Hello!"

Avast!, Used to get someone's attention, like "Hey! Means "Stop!"'

Aye!, It means "I agree".

Aye aye!, To agree with much enthusiasm, "I second that emotion!"

Arrr, A more general pirate term, used to agree or express enthusiam.

Bilge Rat, The bilge is the filthy water and slime that sits at the very bottom of the boat. Rats stowing away on the ship might go swimming around in the bilge. It is a great insult to compare someone to such rats. However, in true pirate spirit, its best to insult everyone as much as you can, both friend and foe. Suggested usage: "You do be the filthiest bilge rat I ever laid eyes on!! Yarrg!"

Black Jack - Large drinking cups made of leather and stiffened with tar.

The Black Spot - A death threat, see BlackSpot.

Bung, The stopper cork in a wine cask. Likewise, the 'bung hole' is the hole that the wine comes out of. "Why look what crawled out of the bung hole," is a great way to introduce any beverage or foodstuff.

Cockswain - The captain's attendant.

Commandeer, To steal. Or take command of ( a ship )

Davey Jones's Locker - The place at the bottom of the sea where drowned pirates go. Davey Jones is an evil spirit that lives in the cold depths of the ocean.

Dredgie(s) Ghost or ghosts of pirates dead by betrayal.

Drivelswigger - A person who spends too much time spouting nautical terms.

Fathom, Six feet of ocean.

Gaff, A hook with a handle used to haul fish out of the sea.

Grog, a delicious beverage made out of rum, water and limes. It served to keep the water from growing algae, keep the sailors happy (but not TOO drunk), and keep them full of lime juice, to prevent scurvy. When talking like a pirate, its fitting to call just about any beverage 'grog', and then you must swill it as vigorously as possible.

The Jolly Roger, The skull and crossbone flag flown by pirates.

Jub, Short for "land lubber" or landlover a piratical term of derision.

Lazaret, A stern ship's hold.

Lily Livered, Chicken, chickenhearted, coward(a), cowardly, fearful, white-livered, yellow, yellow-bellied.

Lubber

Forecastle, (Pronounced "foxel") Below deck bow sleeping quarters.

Savvy, It means something like, "Do you understand, mate?"

Scurvy, A skin disorder caused by a lack of vitamin C.

Scuttle, To sink a ship (on purpose).

Siren, A woman of the sea who lures men to their doom with her sweet song.

Woodworm, A worm that eats wood (the most feared thing on a wooden boat).
