How to "sensor" a nook color?

I was thinking of getting my 11 year old daughter a Nook for Christmas. I have one and I love it but my concern is....there are several "X-Rated' free books that are available to anyone on the Nook and also online.

Does anyone know how to block those? Does the Kindle have the same issue?

There isn't a way to censor the Kindle - many parents have complained about this feature, but currently it is not available. An equal number of parents have said it is up to the parent to censor their own child's content on the Kindle and that they do not want the ability to restrict content added to the Kindle.

If my child buys a Kindle book from Amazon I get an email notification since the account is linked to my credit card. I can immediately see what she has bought and if I object I can delete it from the account and get a refund. I can also punish her for not clearing her purchase with me!!!

There are usually several threads about this topic on Amazon's Kindle boards - one is going right now, in fact. Someone there posted that Amazon is in the business of selling goods to adults, and that although some products might be intended for children, they should not be purchased by children. Kindle ebooks fall into that category and should be monitored by the adult who holds the account, in my opinion.

I have a Nook and I think you can make it so you have to have a password to purchase books. Mine is set to remember the password.

:thumbsup2 I have mine password protected. My kids like to "play" on it, so I want to make sure they don't download anything without my consent (whether objectionable material or not).

It's pretty easy to do, I think you just go into the settings menu right on the Nook and set it up.

I didn't know that. I have it password protected so that you have to enter the pw just to get it "open" but I didn't know you could set one to restrict purchases. I'll have to try it. Thanks!

My DD (15 later this week) has a nook. She doesn't have the p/w for my BN account, so books only get onto the Nook if *I* put them there (she doesn't have a cc, and she's not getting one any time soon, so it's my account).

Its a simple solution. If my DD wants a particular book, she tells me, hey can you download that for me? and I do. Beyond that, when I look at the free book sites, if I see something I think she might like to read, I download it and it just appears on the Nook.
