I am not a DVC member - but wanted to stay at Board Walk Villas.... Can I rent points from a DVC member? If so how do I find a list and also how much ?

Just head over to the rent/trade DVC board here on the DIS. You make arrangements with a fellow DVC DISer. The going rate is about $10 a point.

Good luck!

I had a similar question. Maybe I'm just dense, but I'm still not getting how this works. In particular, it seems too good to be true. What's the catch I'm missing?

Unfortunately, the trade/rent board is just for hooking up deals. Is there anyplace to ask basic quetions?

I'm quite sure they have a section on the rent/trade board for FAQ's.
( Frequently Asked Questions ). Read that first !

While it is a good deal, it requires a lot of trust and limits your ability to make changes. Most members require a deposit (usually 50%) and than payment in full 60-45 days prior to arrival. The member "retains control of the reservation" at all times. IE, if you don't trust them, they could cancel on you and you are out of luck. Be sure to get home and cell numbers and you may actually want to talk to the person first to be comfortable.

I also suggest doing a search on their screen name to get a feel for who they are.

The only thing you won't get with points that you do with a regular CRO room, is daily room service. DVC has trash and towels on day 4 and full room on day 8.

Feel free to PM if you have other specific questions

promise it is for real.

we are in competition with WDW - so we can't rent for what they do - no daily housekeeping for one.

so you can get a bargin!

Step One - go to the Rent/Trade board and read the FAQ.
Step Two - Read the R/T Board sticky "A Word to the Wise"
Step Three - come back here and ask any specific questions you have
Step Four - post a listing on the Rent/trade board. The more specific you are, the less time you will waste and the more positive responses you will get.

Renting gives you an outstanding bargain, but it is not for everyone. It works best when both the renter and the DVC owner fully understand the process, and when the renter's plans are quite firm. A DVC reservation is NOT like a cash reservation. If you plans are uncertain, or subject to change, renting points is probably not the best alternative for you.

If you can set plans and stick to them, you can save a LOT of money renting a reservation from a DVC owner.

Just to clarify, technically you are not renting points, you are renting a reservation. The points always belong to the member and they make a reservation using their points, for you.

You can usually ask questions on the DVC Planning Board. Also, by using the "search" feature...you may be able to find the answers immediately.

One thing I've noticed over on the rent board is that people are often looking for something on relatively short notice. DVC doesn't work that way. If you are looking to rent points now for a March trip and want to stay at BWV, you may be out of luck already - particularly if you want to "save money" and get a standard view room. Start looking seven or more months out for the most flexibility.
