Hi.

I have a delima. My kitchen has a set of metal french doors. Only one side opens. The problem is, having that much window heats up the whole kitchen! I have put the darkening window film, but it hasn't helped much.

I am looking to put curtains or mini blinds on them. Is it possible to drill holes in the doors to hang blinds?

While I was searching, I found magnetic curtain rods. Has anyone tried these? Do they really stay on?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Yes you can drill into metal doors but you need metal screws. I would try the magnetic curtain rod first just keep the package in case it does not work.

We have faux wooden blinds on our french double doors. They were drilled in. I don't know how secure magnetic blinds would be....

I have the magnetic curtain rods on my french doors and they work just fine. I only have sheers on them though, I don't know how they would hold up with a heavier curtain.

My neighbor has the magnetic curtain rods on her back door...not a french door, just a regular window...with a linen curtain on them and they are holding up fine.

My guess is that if you used a cotton curtain it would cut back on some of the heat without being super heavy.

If the magnetic rods don't work, you have to used metal screws to screw into a metal door, but it can be done.

We had the magnetic rod on our french doors and had problems with ours. My wife bought regular rods and I drilled them in. To make it easy, use a metal self tapping #8 or #10 x 1/2 inch screw. Make sure the head on the screw is large enough to cover the holes on the mounting brackets. Any hardware store sells these screws for about 10 cents ea.

There's actually a pretty cool solution just for these kinds of doors. It consists of a mini blind in a frame, enclosed by glass, that screws right into the frame on your french doors. We have the same kind of doors as you, and put these in a few years ago. Easy to install, easy to clean and use.

Here's what they look like:
