I have found if you download the full image and not the thumbnail that helps, as RustManFan stated. I do not have photoshop, so I open all the images in paint. In there you can go under the page set up and select the % of the image to show. You can also select to have it in portrait or landscape. As you change the % you will see in the box how big the image will be compared to the page. If the image is only showing half on the page you might need to decrease the % to get it on 1 page. I have had % anywhere from 50% up to 350% depending on the original image size. If needed you can also decrease the margin. This works well for me because I need a full page image for my husband, but my petite 4 year old daughter needs a much smaller image. I have found this is the only way I can change the size with out the image looking distorted. I just completed 60 shirts for our upcoming trip and I did them all this way.
