I've never had the regular drinking plan while we had magic bands. When we have a sit down meal, how does it work to pay? Do they bring something to scan your band to get your credits? Then how do you tip? For example, at check in I prefer to turn off charging privileges on the bands. So I can't scan band to pay money, just for meal credits. Do they then bring a bill I can add cash to or use a gift card or what?

What do you do?

Yes and yes:). For accessing your dining plan credits they scan your MB.
What do I do? Sometimes I put the tip on a c/c, sometimes use gift cards and sometimes use cash; depends on what's easiest for me at the moment.

Think of the dining plan as just another payment method, like cash or credit. You're going to be using multiple payments on the check - first you use dining plan credits, and whatever is eligible to be paid for with those entitlements are taken off the check first. If anything is left (let's say your table ordered an appetizer to split, for example), you can use another form of payment (case, credit, room charge, gift card, traveler's check, etc.) to pay for that plus any gratuity you wish to add.

Even if you aren't spending any extra money on food or drinks? Just paying for the tip?

Of course! When I've used a gift card to pay for a meal at a restaurant, I still make sure the servers get tipped whether that means leaving cash, or having them run the tip on my credit card. Dining plan isn't much different than that.

You can put the tip on the gift card and from what I understand that is treated closer to paying them with cash than adding it to a credit card is, which now makes some difference in how the servers get taxed on it, so I hear most servers prefer: Cash, the gift card, then credit card/room charge, in that order from best to worst, although all are welcome.

This is good to know!

Oh definitely - I only mentioned that as an example because when we have a gift card to dine out, we RARELY order less than the value of the gift card lol
