how to i get family to go a long with a disney wedding?

My family is not very thrilled about the idea of me getting married at disney, they think that i should just leave it as a dream. How can i get my point across that this should be considered as an option and not just a dream!

Welcome to the Disboards! I wish I really had some advice for you, but let me give it a try. We haven't "broken" the idea to our parents yet, but I think they will accept it. I am (a little) older and a wedding in any form has been a long time coming, so I think as long as it makes me happy my parents will be ok. Plus my friends and family all know what a Disney freak I am!!! But the actual Disney wedding idea came from my DBF (DF2B! We've been doing planning but I'm still waiting for the ring).

You need to show them how affordable a Disney wedding can be. There are options for all different price ranges: intimates, bare-bones customs, or customs with lots of extras!!!

If you can catch the DFTW episode on the Food Network, or the planning DVD from DFTW...you can show them how beautiful and breathtaking it can be. You can also show the options on the DFTW website, but just know that the prices may not be completely accurate. I believe they list very high-end things on the website. The pictures are beautiful and you can sign-up for a wishbook where it'll give you an <idea> of your budget. But like I said, you can do similar things for less $$$.

Well, I didn't get a great reaction at first either. But, I got online and looked at all the info I could find on Disney Weddings. There are all types of sites and this Board has helped a lot! My mother and step dad took the little girls (my mom and him just adopted my little cousins [ages 5, 7,11] ) to Disney World this last year. We (my BF, his son, and I) went too! It wasn't till we had a great time in disney and my mom saw the Wedding Pavilion, that she said, wouldn't be great if one of you got married in Disney World?!!! Oh, and I think it helped that my BF told my mom he was going to ask me to marry him while we at dinner that first night at the Magic Kingdom! So, I guess you can try to get your family to go and experience the Disney Magic!

That's one idea! But on a serious note, I would try to pull up the Disneyweddings web site. Get a wishbook put together and get an idea about cost and what it includes. Bring that info to your family and try to convince them that it's not just a wedding, but also a Vacation for the entire family!!! What could be better than a Wedding, Vacation and Honeymoon all in one?!! Well, whatever you come up with, good luck!

At first we received a lot of opposition because of the distance. However, part of his family is in OK, part in CA, and my family is in IN. Either way his family or my family would have to travel. So we marketed it as an opportunity for all to take a vacation. Besides, weddings where I live(near Chicago) tend to be big to-do's, a lot of people, and expensive. Having it at Disney gives us the opportunity to do a nice wedding for less people but also for slightly less money. Plus, if your family would have to travel to attend your wedding where you live, it is almost ALWAYS cheaper to fly from anywhere to Orlando(southwest airlines) than it is to fly between other locations. Finally, don't forget the discount you will receive on hotels and park tickets. It's a win win situation! Good luck, and let us know how it goes!​

The sad fact is that you may not get them to be thrilled. However, you can get them to see how important it is to you. Tell your family why you have chosen Disney. Talk about all the different options, like a Disney wedding and reception back home or big engagement party at home and a small Disney wedding, or whatever. Your family loves you. They are just a little disappointed. I think parents dream about their kids' weddings, too. But, they also want their children to be happy. If they know how much you really want this, they will come around. Good luck!

One thing I had to bring up to my parents was the cost of the weddings at WDW. After taking them to a bridal show here in Atlanta, and picking up some brochures from the venders, we realized that a Disney wedding actually costs about the same as doing one here. Good luck!

Im from Palm Beach County and in the last 5 years cost of living and everything has gone up like 300%. I mean a 750sq ft home in the projects is $180k! So I thought a DFTW would be more expensive than a wedding here. So I started inquiring on vendors and their prices. A simple wedding in my church (free) with a reception in the least expensive non-ghetto place with the bare minimum everything was around $16k! So for quality we know is superb and luxury of having a wedding that no one will ever forget in my family, a DFTW was more realistic. Also there is alot of family on his side that he hasnt seen in 6+ years (since his brother died) that his mother wants to invite, and were hoping the distance will keep our guest list reasonable. If you need to show your parents and family what the comparative is, get a bunch of estimates and go from there. One major point you can use is that most DFTW sites are already very decked out and decor is very much on the minimal. Good luck I hope this helps!

My DF and I have been torn over this very same issue... My parents are BIG Disney fans, my DF's parents have never been there, and don't understand why we would even consider having a wedding there. They keep pushing the traditional church/reception idea, but we aren't religious and we want our wedding to be small and as simple and laid back as possible. We weighed our options financially as well, and Disney won, hands down. After all, I want the fairytale, of course! Its your wedding, and I think you should do whatever you want. Its your day! Hopefully your family will come to understand your dream of a DFTW.
