How to go about linking reservations?

My DW and I along with another DVC couple we are friends with are planning a vacation for October '09. We decided that we would like to stay in the Tree House Villas and are going to split the points. I called member services to find out how to go about making a reservation this way. They informed me of the options, (linking 2 reservations or borrowing points from one couple while the other makes the reservation under their name).

Does anyone have experience with making reservations this way and how smooth was the process? I always get worried when I have to do something out of the ordinary.

I've done it a couple times and haven't had a problem. I booked some nights, a friend booked others and we had them linked.

We do this all the time with our daughter who owns her own points. We usually do a three-way call to MS when we book this. Works great.

With a linked reservation, you won't have to change rooms, but I think you do still need to do a check-out/check-in at the desk on the morning the reservations change.

If you do a points transfer between accounts, it will be a single reservation. The disadvantage of this, though, is it uses up the one transfer you both have for the year.

I think that we will try to go the route of transferring points to one account and making one reservation. I heard somewhere else that you may have to check in/out in the middle of the stay. I assume that it would not be a big deal but I don't want to have to worry about doing it period. Thanks for letting me know about the limited number of times you can transfer. This would be my first time ever and I don't know if I would do it on a regular basis, good to know anyway though. Thanks for your help.
