My 2 yr old got into a jar of Vaseline - smeared half the jar on his head. I've shampooed twice with baby shampoo, but its still in there...any advice?

Thanks!
Linda

You're probably going to have to leave it and just keep re washing with the baby shampoo, or if you have help you can use bar soap or dishwashing soap like Dawn to cut the grease but I wouldn't try it alone if the babys a squirmer.

My DD did that when she was about 5 - she thought it would be good hair gel. I found all we could do was shampoo over and over. Took about 4 or 5 good shampoos to get it all out.

Maybe try a baking soda and water rinse..it may help, and make sure you are using very warm water...cold water will make it harder to get out...or maybe corn starch????

You can try vinegar as well. That will usually get it out, but you have to be real careful about getting it in his eyes. Also don't use too much otherwise you will bleach his hair out.

Dillute some vinegar with water or use apple cider vinegar (dilluted) after the baking soda....let us know how you make out

Two person job (one to hold jr. still), and you'll want to use a band to keep the soap out of his eyes. Wash the hair with Dawn dishwashing liquid, and let it sit full-strength for about 5 minutes before rinsing it with fairly warm water.

You'll need to use conditioner for a while afterward, detergent will damage the hair a bit and dry it out.

Use the Dawn or at least an adult shampoo. I would wash it in the kitchen sink instead of the tub so you can lay her on the counter and have her head hanging over the sink -less chance of getting the harsher shampoo in her eyes and you can rinse longer.

Thanks everyone for the advice...I'll give them all a try. Of course this Sat. we have a big family party to attend, so I hope he doesn't still look like an ad for 1950's Brill Cream (or whatever that goopy stuff was that guys used). I feel like I should draw a pencil mustache on him and dress him in a suit.

Oh well...

Thanks again!

I was going to suggest the same thing...Dawn.
I use that for everything to cut grease/oil.
Good luck!

My dd did this about 3 weeks ago, I tried all the vinegar, dawn, etc. finally what worked was Redken Cleansing Creme Shampoo. I bought it at Alta, about 10$ I had to use it about 2 times a day for 3 days and her hair was finally clean.

At least you're not alone. My DS did that when he was two also. We just kept washing and washing and washing.....

*sneaking off to the bathroom to move the vasoline to the top shelf*

I learn something new here every day. LOL!

Thanks to everyone who replied, and even searched out articles for me! I found the best thing was putting regular soap on a washcloth and scrubbing his head - better than trying to hold a squirming, wet baby in a tub. Its almost all out now.

Thanks again everyone!

Years ago my sister and I managed to get into a jar of vaseline, but we were old enough to know better. We managed to get all of the vaseline into my sister's hair and gave her a mohawk. Needless to say, it was a complete and total mess and my parents were not happy about the situation...AT ALL.

My parents tried shampooing and eventually went to kerosene. I think it did work, BUT I DON'T RECOMMEND IT for obvious reasons. She ended up with a very sore head and some burns on her forehead.

I don't know what I would do if my DD(2) did that...UGH, I feel for you...have you tried calling his Dr. Maybe he might have some suggestions. I am sure they have seen it all.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid Or Prell Shampoo

:) LOL My oldest also put a whole jar of vaseline into her hair when she was also 2! Lots of shampooing followed!! Even to this day, we still keep the vaseline out of sight and she's 7 1/2 now. Hopefully her 8 month old sister will never discover the "joys" of vaseline! LOL :rotfl:

I would sprinkle some baby powder - put a towel or something in front of his face so he does not breathe the powder in - it will absorb all the grease.

As a hairdresser, I've seen this a few times. Best advice I have is the Dawn detergent, full strength. It may take a shampoo or two, but it works.
