How to get rid of cats in your yard

OP - we have the exact same problem. A neighbor 3 doors down feeds the feral cats like crazy - they have reproduced like crazy too. We have trapped several of the cats and had animal control come get them and deal with it. Do I feel bad? Sometimes, but I also have 2 small kids and I don't enjoy cat p00p and urine all over my plants and yard. Thanks, but no thanks. There's nothing like the smell of cat pee hit you in the face when you open your door and windows.

This is our problem, too. The neighbor's cats come to our yard to do their business, they sleep on our porch rockers & swings, they walk on our vehicles, upset our dogs, etc. The cat feces is the worst part, though. The funny part is, the neighbor came to me a couple times asking me to secure our beagle so it can't chase her cats in her yard. I've corrected my end of it, but her cats are free to roam the neighborhood? :confused3

I have no problem loading up the old BB gun, either.

not PEPPERMINT...
Almost every cat I have ever owned steals peppermints and eats them.

My cat really likes the smell of peppermint, since she associates it with me. :lmao: I used to be addicted to peppermint Altoids until I found out an addiction to mints is a sign of anemia. Once my anemia got handled, I don't crave mints anymore.

OP, no one has suggested it yet, which is good, :thumbsup2 but please do NOT sprinkle cayenne pepper around the yard. (Someone usually suggests it. ) Cats wash themselves. If cayenne pepper is on their paws and they accidentally rub it into their eyes while washing, it could be very bad for them. It's not like someone is going to be able to wash out a feral cat's eye full of cayenne pepper.

My suggestion instead is to let your dogs roam further out. This way the cats get used to the dogs in that area and avoid it.

I do love my dog, I do love most animals, but to ask someone that is being invaded by cats that have become a total nuisance ...to them....to go get a trap, buy food, set out water, trap them, transport them to a "HUB" for that neuter thing seems like Overkill (no pun intended) to me. Geeze, what a job....

I sometimes get my neighbors cats in my yard and it is annoying.another neighbor has a yard that is a dump along the edges, LORD knows what animals are in that garbage he calls a property line .
my dog is restrained shame cats can't be...., I get it...cats roam....I just wish they would roam somewhere else...:thumbsup2.
And my dog, he tends to not even notice them very often...:lmao: Gotta love that dog, he is on his own universe :rotfl2:
SO, I guess if I was over run I could understand the frustration and understand that one has to do what one has to do to live a life as they see fit. :confused3
Good Luck OP and others!

The town I live in will not do anything about the cats. The ASPCA will not do anything about the cats. I can trap them and bring them to animal control but I will have to pay $40. per cat and sign that the cat is mine. Not going to do that.

I dont want to hurt the cats but I am at my wits end. I am not going to let my dogs roam the yard as I do not want them ruining the lawn and plants.

I am going to try keeping the hose out and wetting them whenever I can.

On that note, please be carefull that your dogs have up to date rabie shots.Feral cats can be very viscious and can carry rabies.

I noticed you are in LI too. Not only do you have to sign the cats in at the ASPCA but if they end up being euthanized and the owner finds out they can sue you for taking their cat to be killed. It is really ridiculous here. There are no laws about cats. We don't have any pets but our backyard always needs to be pooper scooped because no matter what I put down the cats poop all over. I find it really annoying that I am expected to spend money on motion activated sprinklers, sonic transmitters, special plants (that I don't want) to keep them away. The cats have ruined my landscaping twice to the point that I had to replace it both times. They have also ruined my vegetable garden by using it as a litter box. That makes me so mad because I loved planting with my Dad as a kid and wanted to do it with my own children. I don't hate animals. I just don't own any because I don't want any. I shouldn't have to deal with them in any capacity as far as I am concerned.
