I am the Queen of Styes, and I am here to tell you if it is internal that NOTHING will help. Mine are always completely inside the lid - sometimes upper lid, sometimes lower, sometimes BOTH at the same time. The eye Dr. says hot compresses, which do NOTHING. I have had some success with prescription Zylet drops and oral doxycycline. In the end mine ALWAYS leave a lump in the eyelid (like a cyst). I have had one surgically removed and it was NOT FUN.
DH recently had one that had a little head on it - he was able to pop it and drain it and it healed fine in a couple of days.
Me too...I always have the type that are under the eyelid and I can pop even though I am not supposed to. I try to convince myself that by using the visin to 'rinse' my eye afterwards, I am not spreading the problem.
I've used hot wet compresses, and they always work for me -- wet a washcloth, zap in the microwave until it's as hot as you can stand, then put on your eye. It's been popped when you feel a stinging in your eye. Depending on the location, the swelling can take a day to go down.
My grandmother always said "epsom salts" but she never said what to do with them!
I once had a stye so bad I went to the ER. My doctor couldn't get me in and my eye was just about swollen shot, and there was a red streak down my face. I remember the resident coming in, saying he was going to lance it, and the attending coming in and saying (and you have to imagine this in a foreign accent to really get the point of it) "No poke the eye! We do not poke the eye here! She go to Dr X, he poke her eye!"
Anyway, I went to the Walmart vision center (where I get my glasses) and the dr there drained it. She seemed pretty pleased to do so, as I'm sure it was outside of her daily..."read line 4" "now line 5". She didn't even charge me for the visit. She prescribed a topical antibiotic, ER had already precribed an oral one.
That was the worse of a hundred I've had. Usually a warm compress works like a charm.
Applying a warm compress to the affected area is one of the best home remedies to get rid of a stye. The heat will increase circulation in the area and speed up the pap and drainage from the stye. This will reduce the symptoms of pain and inflammation.
