How to get from a Disney resort to Universal?

If one doesn't have a car that is. We will be staying onsite at Disney in June and since we watched a TV show about Universal, my 8 year old has been begging for me to take him. I don't have a problem with that but I don't know how to get there. Does Mears still go? If so, does anyone know how much it costs and isn't Mears real fussy about their travel times? Is this the only way short of renting a car for one day?

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, I am no expert here, but I've been reading some of the boards here lately and I've heard a lot of ppl raving about Tiffany, you can visit their web site at http://www.tiffanytowncar.com . (Hopefully that will come up as a link) I think I read that they charge $60.00 round trip but don't quote that. You also could use Mears or a taxi from what I've read although everyone really raves Tiffany.

Hope this helps!

On our honeymoon (in 1997) we used Mears to get back and forth to Universal. They charged $8/pp round trip (but i'm sure that's gone up). We made the reservation at the Guest Services desk and they told us what time to be in front of the lobby. When Mears dropped us off at Universal, we were told to call 2 hours in advance of when we wanted to get picked up. I found it to be very convenient.

I would think a taxi would also be pretty inexpensive to use.

As for the rental car... there's a National Car Rental right inside Disney. Guest services should be able to hook you up for a day. They'd come and pick you up at the hotel and bring you there to get the car.

We took a taxi from AS Movies to Universal and back last year and it cost $25-30 EACH WAY, so about $60 total.

If you are on a budget, do Mears.

Hope this helps!

I'm in the same boat as you for July. I called Mears the other day and they quoted me $12 round trip per person. Their schedule is pretty flexible if I remember and you call them 90 minutes before you're ready to leave Universal and they come and get you. Oh...incase you have plans for say, dinner at another resort, they'll drop you off where ever you want. You don't have to go back to the original point of pick up.

Tiffany sounded wonderful but they want $40 one way. That's too much since I'll be there 2 days.

Good luck and have fun!!!! :D

Yes, if we decide to do this, we will definitely have to use Mears. Those prices!

So, from what I understand, I can make ressies for Mears at my Disney resort guest services desk? How soon in advance?

Or maybe we should rent a car.... <IMG SRC="/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif" alt="confused">

Thanks for the help though! :)

I was able to book a mini van from Nastional for pick up from the desk at the Dolphin for $68. Note though that the desk closes around 4-5PM apparently.

There is a service called the Movie Star Shuttle. It is run by USF and I believe the price is about 49.00 including park ticket. You can search for Movie Star Shuttle on these boards and get more info.

Usually Mears requires a 24 hour advance reservation.
I actually thought about renting a car, but I would only need it for the 2 days we're going over to Universal. Mears will be the way for us especially since they'll drop us off where ever we want to go.

Whatever you do, Have a Great Time!! :)

Very inexpensive and very efficient. I know they recommend calling 2 hours before you want to go back to your resort, but we never did. We just walked down to the Mears pick-up area and there were always buses coming in and going out. If you're going during a busy time though, I would recommend calling just to be sure you get a seat.

From Disney to Universal, we just called Mears the night before for pick-up the following morning. ;)

I was amazed at how much cheaper Mears is than Tiffany for going from WDW resort to Universal.
However, for the $60 round trip, Tiffany provides a car that picks up just your party. My guess is that these less expensive Mears prices are for their bus service... My next question for Mears would be: Does the bus stop at all the different WDW resorts or is there one bus per resort? If it stops at many resorts, you could be stuck on the bus for a while! (unless your resort is first).
