How to get a rental car when staying near DL?

We would like to visit So Cal for close to 10 days next year. We won't need a rental car for the 5 or so days we stay at DL, but will need one to drive to San Diego for a few days. Does anyone have a rental car recommendation from the DL area? Or can you only rent one from the airport?

How do you recommend getting to Universal or Knott's Berry Farm without a rental car? Is that doable?

We will definitely need a rental car for part of our trip, but the prices to rent one for the full 10 days is pretty steep. How does everyone here do this? We haven't been to DL & are used to not needing a car at WDW. Any info would be greatly appreciated - thanks!!

Just about all of the major companies have rental counters within a few blocks of the Disneyland Resort. I prefer Budget which is a short bus hop south on Harbor Blvd about 4-6 blocks from the resort. (We got a mid-size in 2001 for about $30/day. Expect rates to be about $30-40 now.) Thrifty I believe has an outlet at the corner of Harbor & Katella and I beleive National is about a block away from the main gates.

It is possible to get to Universal or Knotts by using an tour company like Starline Tours ( www.starlinetours.com ) but if you want to take things at your own pace, go ahead and rent.
