I definitely understand the mentality to want to make sure you still take your trip. I sometimes feel like it's when I'm most down that I miss Disney most.
That said, you've got a whole cheering squad here rooting for you!
Also, we've been using a story with my students right now called "Those Shoes" where the character learns the difference between want and need. If you want me to shoot you a copy of it, send me a PM.
As you stated, you're in a major metropolitan area so your chances are better of finding work there than if you were in some small town in Saskatchewan!
Same exact job position for me. I was a programmer for years (after spending a few years in science), and my last job was in application support. Maybe a move from California to Toronto?
Or try here in waterloo we have a lot of tech jobs, more and more are hiring everyday. This weekend one company even had a job fair (sorry don't remember which one, but I know it wasn't RIM)
Hang in there, I know someone else who lost their job last month, but yesterday started a new job.
Go on your trip, enjoy yourself and regroup. Take this time to evaluate where you are.
