We are in need of a mattress for our son who is switching to a big boy bed. I have no idea how to bargin shop for a mattress. I dont mind paying good $$ for a good mattress, but I know what they list at in the store can be talked down. Is there a general percentage off I should try to ask for?

Do you belong to a Costco/Sam's Club/BJ's by any chance? Honestly, the cheapo mattresses we bought for my ds' room at Sam's Club are some of the most comfy ones I've ever slept on (last summer we dragged them downstairs and slept on the them when the a/c was out for a couple of weeks). Cost: well under $100.

Besides Sam's or Costco, you can go into most mattress stores, like Sleep Experts or Mattress Firm, and ask if they have a clearance section. They usually do. What about IKEA?

I second going to BJ's. We just got a very nice twin mattress for my dd's top bunk for $99. We also have 5 other twin mattresses (2 more bunks and dd's bottom bed) by Sealy and I honestly prefer the BJ's one a bit more.

We just went through this a few weeks ago. Are you using a convertible crib? If so, check out the rails ahead of time and see how high the mattress will be off the floor with box spring. Our mattress is sitting kinda high for our little guy, he can get down no problem but he won't be able to get in bed himself for awhile. They sell low profile box springs that might be worth it.

Mattress salesman are like used car salesman. Have a price you are willing to pay and they will "magically" get there. We went for a model a step or two above the absolute lowest quality. No toddler needs a pillowtop mattress. So something basic but decent. Our mattress and box spring for a double were $699 on sale for $599 with a $50 rebate to get you to $550. We said we weren't paying more than $400. Suddenly they had 1 left of "last years" model. Normally they don't do free shipping for that cost, but of course because we were local they would do it, blah, blah, blah. A manager will have to get involved to "approve" the deal more than likely. If you start to walk out they might stop you and offer a sweeter deal.

WOW! I would never pay $400 for a twin mattress set. I second Costco/Sam's or try Big Lots- they have name brand mattresses for under $150 a set.

Scratch and dent - they usually have a corner that is dirty from someone dragging it across the floor in the warehouse. Sometimes some stitches are funny, etc. My in-laws sell mattresses (DS works for them), and if there is a TINY flaw - they practically give them away. Just call a furniture dealer and ask before you go. :)

We got a Sealy mattress at Big Lots about five years ago and we have had no problems with it. In fact, I would buy another one there in a heart beat. You don't have the "used car sales men" stalking you in the store and the prices can't be beat. They sell four styles of Sealy's and they email 20% off coupons (you can sign up on line for the coupons) every few months that you can use on anything in the store.

Plus twice a year they give you the box spring for free.

Our local Costco only had Sealy doubles for $399 (with box spring). I got an equivalent Sealy for the same price at a store and got free delivery. I'm not sure where people are finding these super cheap mattresses at Costco. The problem with going to Costco/Sam's is you need to get the thing home. Your standard double won't fit in the average SUV. So you need a truck or a super big SUV.

Good to know you paid $399 for a set. We looked at a set yesterday but they wanted $800 for the set. The sticker price said $1149.00. Those prices just seem so high to me.
