How to convince dh we need a vacation!

We are getting a pretty nice refund back and I'd like to take some of it for a family vacation. My dh on the other hand is happy just camping in our camper during the summer. I like camping, don't get me wrong. But I'd like to take a real vacation (our last one was December of 05 when we went to WDW). Of course I'd like to go back to WDW but I'd be happy seeing other parts of the country. I'd like to see the Grand Canyon- Gettysburg- New Orleans- The Pacific Ocean- The Caribbean plus others I'm sure! Where would you suggest?

Do you have kids? Washington DC & Williamsburg Virginia if you do. If I could tear myself away from Disny that's where I'd go. Of course, since I'm not an outdoorsy girl, anywhere with an indoor bed, shower & restaurant would work for me!

Any of those places but Gettysburg. We've been there twice in the summer and the heat was so opressive we did NOT enjoy ourselves nor were we able to walk the battlefield. Grand Canyon reservations are usually very hard to get for the summer. Try N'awlins, San Francisco or an all inclusive resort on St. Lucia! Good luck! Say- there is a very cool campground like resort on St. John, USVI called Maho Bay. Take a look at that, we love it!!!!!

Like a PP said I think DC and Williamsburg is a good place if you have kids. When I was in 5th or 6th grade we went to Gettysburg for a quick 2 day/1 night trip on the way to DC. If you are driving you could hit Gettysburg then continue on to DC and Williamsburg. If you wanted to get a little beach time in you could even do a day at VA Beach.

I see you are in Maine, have you been to Montreal or Quebec City? I really want to go to both of those cities and they might be convenient for you if you are looking for something close.

Of the places you listed New Orleans is the one I would suggest least. Not because it wouldn't be fun but if you are looking for a family trip the others just sound more appealing. JMO.

How about a camping trip through the national parks? Start at Mount Rushmore and move west through Yellowstone and down to the Grand Canyon (I don't know how much time you have for something like this though).

I'd pick an island and book it. In Hawaii they have a resort that has tent like cabins where you sleep outdoors. I think that would be fun. Of course I love Atlantis in the Bahamas. That place is so relaxing and beautiful. The kids would also love it. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Okay, your DH doesn't get a vote this year... This is YOUR year for YOUR vacation!!!!!
Don't 'convince' him, just tell him!!!!!

We are lucky, as we now have my inlaws timeshare week to use... So we have had a few nice vacations.

Grand Canyon... that was an AWESOME trip! Stay at gorgeous Sedona, Do the Pink Jeep Tour (a complete 'must'), Slide Rock, etc... and then see the Grand Canyon from there.

I do not remember the ages of your son/kids.... Our son was 10 when we went on this Sedona/Grand Canyon trip and he totally LOVED it!

In a few weeks we are leaving for the Historic Williamsburg / DC trip that others are describing. DH and I did this before DS, and we immediately promised that when our son was about 12, we were coming back to bring him to experience all of this. Hopefully this will be another awesome trip! for kids there is Water Country, and we are not theme-park people, but of course there is Busch Gardens. We will be taking a day-trip drive up the coast, Chesapeake Bay bridge, Chincoteage Island.

If you want affordable Caribbean, of course the first options are Bahamas and Mexico (Mayan Riviera). I would LOVE to see the Exumas!!! ( where Isla Cruces was filmed for POTC) But, for an easier and probably more affordable vacation, the Mayan Riviera, the ruins at Tulum, etc... sound great.

Which places in the Caribbean jump to your mind...
Are you looking for big-resort all inclusive, or something more off the beaten path....

I might suggest Cheapcaribbean.com as a good place to start looking and shopping. They seem reputable and seem to have competitive prices for their vacation plans.

Yeah, tell your hubby you want to get out of Maine for a bit!

There are SO many places that would be fun to visit. I'm thinking your kids are pre-teens/teens? Some of our favorite vacations when our kids were teens include the Bahamas, Hawaii, Key West and driving down the coast of California from San Francisco to San Diego.

The Grand Canyon, and surrounding area, is also a wonderful place to visit. Absolutely stunning!

I agree with a previous poster about New Orleans. It was fun and different in its' own way, but honestly, not one of my favorite vacations, especially with kids.

New York City and Washington DC have a ton of things to do and see, and are fun for a vacation.
