The tag says Dry Clean Only. I don't know how much it would cost to dry clean, but I'm wondering if those Dryell sheets (I think that's what they're called) to use in the dryer really work. I also have a few cashmere sweaters that need to be dry cleaned.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. TIA.

I have two and I throw them in the washer and dryer and they are still in great shape...the key is to make sure when you put them in the dryer make sure they get all the way dry.I also bleach my white one to kep it nice and white.

In my own experience, I have found that those dry clean at home kits are good for just freshening up, not really cleaning. If the item is dirty or has any body odor on it, it will not do the trick.
You don't say how big the comforter is, but before you go out and buy one of those kits, make sure the comforter fits in your dryer!

The comforter is queen size. I have a HE washer, and a good sized dryer. I never thought about it fitting in the dryer. Thanks for that suggestion. I'll have to check it out.

My husband has washed his down vest in the washer and thrown it in the dryer. He puts tennis balls in the dryer to fluff up the down as its drying. I don't know how it would work for a comforter.

Technically, they only have to put one method of cleaning on something.

The sweaters I wouldn't mess with myself.

The comforter. I'd go ahead and wash it, but when you put it in the dryer, dry on a lower setting and tennis balls are fine. 3 or 4 clean tennis balls...with it to help declump the feathers.

Not to hijack the thread but I am curious - what do the tennis balls do exactly? I have never heard of this..

How to clean down.

You can wash down. Here is some info.

Manufacturers are required by law to put on the label ONE way that the item can be cleaned. That doesn't mean the BEST way.

Depending on the color, (will the colors bleed?) I would wash it.

Down's insulating ability comes from loft. Basically, it is the how much it expands to trap air. Soap residue will cause down to lose lofting ability. So will bleach. It will break down the filaments and it won't trap as much air. Liquid fabric softeners will also cause the down not to loft.

When washing, use cold or warm water, never hot, on a delicate setting (It won't get "beat up" which will cause the filaments to break. Also, wash it by itself for the same reason. A mild soap, that rinses thoroughly. (I don't use as much, and will run it through an extra rinse or too, to make sure all of the soap residue is gone.) I also prefer liquid to powder for that reason.

Then dry on low with clean tennis balls to fluff it up. If you don't have tennis balls, you can use dryer balls. I have even used clean, freshly laundered canvas sneakers. It will take a REALLY long time to dry on low. I usually will dry it most of the way (it is fluffed as much as possible, no clumps of down), then hang it up to finish drying.

:)

Do realize that washing it may cause the outer shell to shrink, depending on the material it is made from. Something to consider.
